Disney icons go on a diet

Is Minnie too skinny? Disney icons go on a diet -- for fashion. TODAY

Minnie, Goofy, Daisy – timeless, complete characters who don’t need to change a thing, right? Unless you talk to the fashion industry.

The trusty cartoon gang landed a sweet gig fronting the new Barney’s 2012 holiday campaign “Electric Holiday” (release date: Nov. 14, in collaboration with the Walt Disney Co.), which pays homage to the beloved characters – along with Disneyland’s famous Electrical Parade – with light installations at the New York flagship store and a short film portraying the characters as models. But the creative forces had a few issues with … the size of the fictional characters. Barney’s creative director Dennis Freedman explained to WWD that although he had intended to portray them as accurately as he “possibly could,” he just couldn’t envision their round, toon-ish physiques doing right by couture brands:

"When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion. The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don’t change. I said, ‘If we’re going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,’ and they agreed. When you see Goofy, Minnie and Mickey, they are runway models.”

Behold, the fashion makeovers! (Please, shield your children's eyes!)

Studies: Recession and Hand Sanitizer

Moms are bearing the brunt of recession, study shows. TODAY

Though the media has focused on the plight of unemployed dads, it’s moms who are suffering the most in the current recession, a new study shows.
The study, which looked at the outcomes for laid-off workers across the United States, found that married women with kids spent more time in-between jobs than married dads.
Making matters worse for the moms was the big pay cut they took once they finally found a job: On average moms lost $175 per week more than dads, according to the study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association.

A widely used antibacterial chemical widely used in hand soaps, sanitizers and other personal-care products may impair muscle function, according to a new study by UC Davis researchers.

Flash Mob for Marriage Proposal

WATCH: Flash Mob Hands Out Flowers for a Super-Sweet Marriage Proposal. Shine from YAHOO!

When Boston-resident Jack Cushman decided to propose to Teresa Elsey, his girlfriend of nearly three years, he was certain that she'd say yes. So all that was left to figure out was how he'd make the moment memorable.
"Since I wasn't too nervous about the question itself, I decided to come up with a ridiculously complicated plan to worry about instead," Cushman wrote in an essay for The Huffington Post.
"My first thought was just to get a bunch of strangers to give Teresa flowers as she was coming home from work, people in all kinds of improbable places," he told Yahoo! Shine in an interview. "I wanted to create a world where good things happen for no reason, a world full of bounty. I just loved the idea of just being able to give that to her."
