Let's put an end to body-shaming

Scott posted this in response to a comment on our Facebook page: I surprised a listener by being fatter than he expected today... I thought for a long time about what to say... Here's what I wrote, I think there is a lesson in here for all of us, I know there was for me. Hey guys, not sure which of you we disappointed, perhaps both, by being 'fatter' than you expected. This is Scott, let me start by saying, Michael thanks for your service to our country and for the sacrifices that you have made. I am not surprised by your comment being directed at me, you're observation is correct, I am overweight, but I do feel that your assessment of Kelli is unfair, and I take issue with that. She is my friend and your remark was less than kind, that bothers me. I have struggled with my weight all of my life, you certainly are not the first, or I am sure the last person, to call me fat. For your information, I am at the gym 3-5 days a week, and have tried most every diet and yoyo'd back and forth for most of my life. There has not been a day for the past 30 years that I have not cried out to God for help. Being overweight in this culture is really hard, since our culture rarely looks beyond what they see on the surface, how unfortunate, how many beautiful people do we miss for being slaves to the culture we live in. I have made the same mistakes myself, on occasion, and I am ashamed of myself for doing so. Thankfully we serve a God who sees beyond the surface, he says he judges a man by his heart. Perhaps what others may see when they look at me will never wow them on the surface, my hope is that if they scratch the surface, they'll be delighted by what they find underneath. I am fortunate to have family and friends who bothered to scratch the surface and not a day goes by that I am not grateful beyond words for that. Your comments today stung for a moment, but perhaps what is a greater cause for concern is that fact that living life so superficially, as we often do, may cause us to miss Jesus. Ironically enough, in the book of Isaiah, chapter 53 it says, "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men would hide their faces, he was was despised, and they esteemed him not. How many of us would have missed Jesus because we fail to look beyond what we see of someone on the surface.

How do you encourage your kids to eat healthy?

Chef Jamie Oliver is taking on school lunches. His new reality show recently changed the lunch menu at a school and made it healthy.  The kids are rebelling and demanding the return of their chicken nuggets and pizza! What does a parent do to encourage healthy eating in their kids? Any suggestions? Questions?

Here's a great tool that can help us learn more about the foods we're eating. It's a free tool (look for all the places to click "free!").  Find it here: http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/.

The Return of Laverne and Shirley!

Word has it they are working on a movie version of the '70's TV show, "Laverne and Shirley." They are casting Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel in the lead roles. Odd casting? Who would you cast as Laverne and Shirley?
