You Are Making A Difference in India - Sumit's story

We have made it to New Delhi, India!  New Delhi is a city of 14 million people, it is a city with a long, rich history of being built and re-built, from the invasion and rule of Islamic moguls, to British occupation, Delhi has served as a capital city for thousands of years, and is considered to be one of the World’s oldest cities.

The occupying force in Delhi today is not another country, it is poverty!  Delhi’s growing poverty problem leaves many completely void of hope! To give you a little perspective of the need, 1/3 of the World’s poor live in India, 33% live on less than a $1/ day, nearly 70% live on less than $2/day… Not an hour, that would be horrible enough… but less than $1-$2 A DAY!!!

These truly are the “least of these”, they have been cast off by just about everyone, that’s why it is so important for us to help them through World Vision child sponsorship.  World Vision is working here in the slums of Delhi, to bring hope and change the lives of children and their communities.  For what you will spend taking your family through the drive thru for a few value meals, you can change the life a child and give them HOPE!

On this journey to show Love Around The Word, we have seen child sponsor do WONDERS!  In fact today we met, Sumit, he is 5 years old and lives with his family of 4, in a very small 1 bedroom home with a small porch.  The total living area is about the size of a small bedroom.

The slum where Sumit lives is filled with garbage and raw sewage, and the description of the smells that we encountered would not be done justice by anything that I write here.  Sumit’s family is in desperate need of help, and thanks to Marcus, a KLOVE listener from Moline, IL., they are getting it!

We were the first visitors that had ever had to their home, and we were welcomed with open arms.  Sumit’s parents said that Marcus’ sponsorship was an answer to prayer.  They shared, through tears, that they would not be able to make it with out World Vision’s help.  Sumit is such a bright boy, and his mother said she is so grateful for his education, because she now believes that his dreams will come true.  I asked Sumit what he wants to do, and he said he wants to be a doctor, so he can help people.

I have no doubt that he will make it!  Because of Marcus’ sponsorship, Sumit’s family is not only getting much needed food, and clean drinking water, but they now have hope that his education will help break the chain of poverty in his family.

Nothing is more rewarding than knowing that you have answered Jesus’ call to love others, to love “the least of these”, your sponsorship can change a life of a little boy, like Sumit, his family and their village.

Thanks for following Marcus’ lead, and sponsor a child TODAY.  Kids like Sumit need your help desperately!  Just click the sponsorship link at

Death to Despair

Few things weigh you down more than despair and a complete lack of hope. Walking along the streets of Bangkok, we have certainly seen the face of despair. Bangkok is a city of 12 million, many of whom, make less a day than what minimum wage pays in an hour in the United States.

Hope’s enemy is despair, it is described as “The complete loss or absence of hope,” whereas, Webster’s defines hope as, “A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.”

Today in Bangkok, we saw despair delivered a deathblow because of what World Vision is doing through people just like you and me, people who care about others the way that Jesus commanded us too, “loving the least of these.” Child sponsorship is not only transforming these children’s lives, but the lives of their families and their communities.

Today in Bangkok, we met families whose entire lives have been transformed because of sponsorship.  They still have very little, but they are managing to live off the little they have.  They have hope now, because they realize that for the first time in their family’s history, their children, by getting an education, can break the bonds of poverty.  The kids dream about college and becoming teachers, engineers and fashion designers.

World Vision is also bringing these different families together, and now they are caring for one another. When they see another family in need, they give whatever they can to help, and they don’t have much. Most of the parents that we met work 20 hours a day to bring home between $5-10, but they give anyway.  All because World Vision sponsors have taught them how powerful giving to and caring for others can be.  They have learned that hope changes EVERYTHING!

Seeing their love and care for one another has been humbling. If we, as Christians, were as generous, we could eradicate hunger and poverty around the World, and why wait for tomorrow?  There are kids, families and communities, just like this one, in need of hope today!  As Christians, we are called to be “the light of the world”, to be Christ’s ambassadors in the world.  You can bring hope to these families for about a dollar a day, such a small price to change the life of a child, their family and their community. Be 1 of the 1,000 this month to share Love Around The World and sponsor a World Vision child TODAY!

Education, the Great Equalizer

Potential: “Having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future.”  Nothing feels quite as good as someone who encourages you because they see potential in you.  When someone sees potential in you, it inspires, it motivates you to try harder, to dream bigger.  It only takes one person to believe in you to fill your sails with wind.  Dr. Leo Buscaglia wrote, “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

You have that potential!  Your sponsorship of a World Vision child unlocks their potential and turns their life around.  While traveling around Bangkok, over and over again we have seen that not only are you unlocking the potential of a child, but the potential their entire family and the community in which they live.

Sponsorship is more than just helping them with life’s basic necessities like food and clean drinking water, it’s also helping them get an education.  For these kids, education is the great equalizer, it’s the difference maker, that can unlock dreams and helps them come true.  Nelson Mandela said it this way, “Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the World.”

We are certainly seeing that here in Thailand, Parichad is now 19 years old, she was sponsored through World Vision from the age of 6, and it has completely transformed her life.  We had the privilege of meeting her, she was a little shy at first, but when talking about her future, she lit up the room.  Her smile beamed as she shared about her college education.  She is studying to be a teacher, and vows that one day she will return to her neighborhood, so that she can help change the life of other kids, who just like her, find themselves void of hope without the love and encouragement child sponsorship offers.

She shared how much hope her sponsor gave her, although she never knew them, she said, “I always worked hard, so that I would make them proud, just like they were her own parents.”  She hopes and prays that you will help children who desperately need to know that someone cares about them.

Without an education, these children have no hope.  Without an education, they are completely vulnerable, and sadly often times victimized, of the 27 million people trafficked in the World and forced into labor, nearly 10 million of them are in this region of southeast Asia.

Thanks to World Vision’s work in Bangkok, Parichad’s life and future are now full of hope!   Thank you so much for helping change another child’s life today, by investing $35 a month into a child, you are unlocking their potential.
