Mispronounced words...are you guilty?!

When I say Arkansas (Are and Kansas) instead of (Ar-kan-saww). and it irritates me that Kansas is pronounced as it should but A R is placed in front of it and now it has a completely different pronunciation.  

I makes me laugh when Pastor's pronounce naked as neck-ed!!!!!!!  Adam & Eve wasn't necked they were naked.  

i laughed when i heard you guys on the way home from work today.  my mom says 'melk' instead of milk and it drives my hubby crazy!  i say 'amond' instead of almond but thats a local thing.  when the nut is in the tree its an aLmond but when it falls the L falls also so its an amond. but for some reason still spelled almond

I used to work at a bank as a teller. One of the things that used to bother me was when people would refer to their checking account as their "checkings." I had to catch myself from saying "no, no... it's your 'checking'... singular."

Another word is one my dad says a lot... "warsh" instead of "wash." My grandmother also says it. Maybe it's a Texan thing?

oh my pet peeve and other people's too:
Iraq and Iran are NOT pronounced Eye-raq or Eye-ran, they are prounounced EEE-raq and EEE-ran, America should get it right...we're allready stepping on some toes there...

It drives me crazy when people say expecially instead of especially. Or expresso instead of esspresso. There is no X in either of those words!  =)

I love this subject! My sister-in-law is the sweetest person I know from WI (I only know one) but she says "hamm-ock" when we say hamm-ick..phonetically I think she is right but it takes you by surprise. She also calls a bag a "Beg" like bagel, she is so funny.

For some people I think it's all about where they grew up.
But young people in London,England would pronounce Isn't it as In't. I hated it so much when i was there last April.

A relative says rotator cup. It is rotator CUFF. It is not a cup.

How about "supposeBLY" instead of supposedly. I have know some higly educated people that say it with a B.

I can relate so well to this subject! Why have you not done this sooner!? My "bug" is when people say "q-cumber" when the correct pronunciation is coo-cumber. Our local grocery store is Fred Meyer but I hear too many people say it plural: "I am going to Fred Meyers". You don't say "I am going to Wal-Marts." Ughhh, it drives me bonkers.

It irritates me when people pronounce "realtor" as "realitor"...with an "I". There is no "I" in realtor!

I went on a leadership conference to D.C. (I'm from Illinois)and met LOTS of other teens from all over. The first thing we talked about was how everyone pronounced words. In WI its beg not bag. About 20 girls talked for over an hour about all the ways different states say things, or even the different areas, or towns in those states. Pellow instead of pillow and buddon instead of button. Its either irritating or funny.

Instead of saying 'water' my aunt says 'worter'.  My sisters and I always found this comical when we were growing up.

Just recently i was telling my cousin about a song i reslly liked that i had heard on K-Love, he then asked me if I knew why they had named the station Caleb because he would like to know! so i set him straight and I told him its K-Love!!

Now pecan trees come from the south and so do I so come on who knows how to pronounce that one correctly!

Oh, and Illinois. The "s" is silent.
And.. I'm not sure on Missouri. Half the state says "MissourA" and the other says "MissourE" ..So what is it?

I have NEVER heard a radio personality, news, weather, dj, etc., say Feh-Brew-ary.  It is always Feb-you-ary.  Two (2), count them, two (2) r's in February.  The second worst is ax me a question!!!!~

Nuc-u-lar drives me crazy - I work in the industry and more than 1/2 the people here say it that way. It's new-clear! Also supposebly - there's no B in that word...it's supposeDly. The most frustrating part? Even after you gently tell them the correct pronunciation they continue to do it. Don't even get me started on "I could care less" - not a mispronunciation, but if you COULD care LESS, that means you care! It's could'NT care less. Love y'all

The English language is a difficult language.  It's no wonder that foreigners have such a hard time understanding.  Yesterday, my Dad went in for a surger on his torn meniscus on his right knee.  Well, I received a text from my Mom saying that it is going to be a long procedure because he had to tears.  Well, when I read the text, all could see was a tear in each of my Father's eyes.  Who said that tear (to tear a piece of paper) and tear (what you shed when you're sad) could be spelt the same????  UUuuggghhhh!

To Shannon, a similar situation is "irregardless" dose that mean that it's reguarding now????

Where do I start??  How about "medium" instead of "median" haha or "Wal-Marks" instead of "Wal-Mart"!  Somebody commented earlier about their grandmother "warshing" her hands....mine would "wrench" hers! Finally - there is no "R" in Pillow!  I have a sister-in-law that sleeps on a piller, but I think that's just a country thing!! lol

I am so guilty of this. To the point that I actually make an effort to pronounce words wrong. But I never knew that the round thing on the door at Christmas is a wreath and not a reef

I know this is weird BUT when I have a paper and my mom mispronounces Thesis and pronounces Theesees UGH it irritates me so much also I hate it when people mispronounce my name I know it is spelled weird but how does Jael look like Jail, Jeal, Joel, JoEl, or JoEllen? it is pronounced JL lol!

also I mispronounce the word Frisby by saying Thrisby and instead of Thumb I say Fumb and instead of saying Finger I say thinger it drives my brother CRAZY!

I live in Northern New York and I work in a dental office, it drives me nuts when we see patients and they say, "My gums (pronouncing it gooms) are sore..." It took me like six months to figure out what they were saying...I am not from around here....I only moved here a few years ago...

Ok, so I'm listening to you guys now about the aunt and ant thing. haha! Ant is Southern slang! Anyway, I have two peeve mispronounced words...I have a coworker who says "pacific" instead of "specific" - this an educated teacher! OMG! My other is for someone to say "plaskit" instead of "plastic". Yeah, I'm an English teacher. Thanks, Scott and Kelli, for making my days!

MY mother loves to say " I am going to go warsh my hands" instead of wash.

And my sister says " I am going to go blowerdry my hair" instead of I am going to go blow dry my hair.

I also want to comment that I hate it when people mispronounce wifi! my friends grandma pronounces it WIFY and I hate it when people mispronounce stuff like Education and make up words like Edgamication or Kindygaden or Shanostril for nose.. it irritates me a whole lot! haha

also I tick off my english teacher and any teacher when I say I doesnt have that me is hungery or when I say Synamon (the english type of word thing) for the food word Cinamon (and vise-versa hahahaha

How about "acrost" versus "across" or "warsh" versus "wash"....I hear those ALL the time and they get me!  "I went acrost the bridge this morning to warsh my car"...its just crazy talk!

Hey, sometimes the way we pronounce words depends on the region where we were raised. I lived in MI, moved to CO and was corrected that Portland is not in Or-ah-gohn.

A phrase that bothers me is "near miss".  Isn't a near miss a "hit"?

People say "irregardless" all the time and it drives me nuts!!!!  It is redundant of the word "regardless".  

Scott,  I am with you.  It is "AUNT" only because I am not an "ant".  I think this is a mid-west thing.

I say woof instead of wolf.  When I mispronounce something, I usually follow it up with, "Yes, I are a college grad-you-ate."  And, by the way, it is Mizzourah to the folks down south state and MizzourE to those of us in the middle and north.  My husband used to say, "Come thither" instead of "Come hither".  I also say dawg instead of dog.  Sometimes you have to embrace those sill little things.

The two words that bother me the most are "flustrated" a mixture of flustered and frustrated and even more...mixing up Calvary and cavalry! I hate that one! It's like blasphemy in my ears!

I am from Lubbock, Texas. Pronounced, LubbOCK, just like it's spelled. Drives me nuts to hear people say, "LubBIK".

We say Mob-ul, not Mo-bile, and in England, they say "Al-u-min-ee-um, instead of al-oo-min-um. :p

I have to comment on the "AUNT" argument. I have a neice and nephew, and if they called me "AUNT" I would feel 100 years old, I am their aunt (ant), the u is silent in my book. Also, Wal-mart is singular, I cringe when people say they are going to Wal-marts. Last, Brookshire's is pronounced Brookshure's not BrookSHIRE's. We are all goofy like that!! Have a blessed Day!!

BTW, I think it is hilarious that there are so many misspelled words in these posts. I'm a teacher and that really bugs me!

My mom is notorious for mispronouncing words.  One of her biggest ones was documentaries.  Being a film major I hear the word pronnounced all the time as DOC-umentary.  My mom has this thing that makes her think that documen-TARY is the proper pronunciation!  She also adds s's to words.  We don't go to Walmart we go to Walmart-s, makes me cringe!!!  But you gotta love her!

I have 2 things to say... one I want to tell you that the proper pronunciation of the word "aunt" is ant according to the dictionary the "u" is silent and it gives the pronunciation of "ant & aant". the 2nd thing is my dad instead of saying the word "against" says "agin" as in he threw something up "agin" the wall which totally cracks me up.... been trying to call for quite a while now but getting busy tone so decided to write instead.

It's irritating when as DJ's you can't put the "ing" on the end of words..when the short cut is always said lovin,going,sendin,bein etc. And the DJ who NEVER completes the "ing" is named Sterling...how odd is that!  You should all call her Sterlin.

When my husband used to take meat out of the freezer to thaw, he would say "unthaw"!  It turns out mom-in-law says it,too!  I ribbed my husband so much, it cured him!

My comment is just the same as Georgia's. My pastor was born in the South, in the mountains. Every time he reads the word naked in the Bible, he says neked.

I really grind my teeth when I hear someone say something is a "mute point".  Honestly, if you're going to try and talk fancy and call something MOOT, at least know how to pronounce it!  I also cringe when one of my co-workers talks about her lunch and what kind of a "sammich" she brought that day!  The funniest mis-speaking I've ever heard, though, has to have been from my wonderful grandmother.  Because of tragic family circumstances, she never made it past the 1st grade in school, and never learned to read or write.  Much of what she learned, she learned from hearing, and sometimes she heard things just a little bit off.  For instance---she called the analgesic tablets with the brand name Anacin "Andersons" instead.  She'd say something like:  "My back has been hurting this morning, I think I'll take a couple of Andersons".  I wish I could remember everything she said that we privately giggled about, but I know I'll never forget her mis-pronouncing "crutches".  (My grandfather had a leg amputated, late in life,  due to cancer, and got around the house on crutches).  Unfortunately, Grandma called them "crotches"!  It got really bad when one of my cousins was injured in a high school football game and needed some ambulatory assistance.  Grandma made a big point of telling his parents that they didn't need to spend the money on a new pair of "crotches", because my cousin could just use an old pair of Grandpa's!  We really loved her, and her quotable quotes.

My sister says "anti-b-otic" for antibiotic.  And my mom used to say "creyn" for crayon - now she just avoids the word altogether b/c we gave her such a hard time.  Also, my husband says "awrs" for hours.  

Oh my goodness, I have so many.  

My grandma grew up in Kentucky & West Virginia, so she says so many things wrong.  A few of my favorites...I'm gonna take a SHARE instead of a SHOWER....I'll be ready in about an AIR...instead of an HOUR.  Open the WINDER instead of Window.  Uh, I could go on forever.

My mom says Battree (Battery)...Funny thing is both my dad and my husband work at a factory that make car batteries...she says they work at "_____ BATTREE"

My husband and I argue of CARMUL and CARAMEL.  

He also pronouces my name wrong (LARAH) instead of LOR-AH)

I used to say LAWYUR istead of LOYYER for Lawyer, and my best friend drove me NUTS about it, so I say it correctly now.  

HUGE pet peeve is HOOMAN for Human.

The man asked her what she was talking about and when she explained he said, "Oh, I thought you said menoodle. It's menudo." hilarious

My says "Ibupropren" instead of Ibuprofen. Drives me crazy, but I don't tell him he's pronouncing it wrong.

Because of regional dialect, I catch myself saying "prolly", instead of "probably". I have to work on that. And the way I say "ask" sounds..well..unprintable. :p

I have the worst one that every body has done at one point and 50% of all Americans don't know they do it but they do it is "saw" so many people say it like "saul" there is not a "U" in there they need to stop saying my dad gets so mad because i do it so much.

when people say the gateway arch wronge. They say the gateway "ARK".... that is what really disturbes me.

This isn't about miss-pronouncing word but my nerdy friend, Olibia will always correct my grammar!!!! i like to drize her nuts by purposely using horrible grammar!!!

I love when my Bible study teacher miss-pronounces my friend's name, Gabrielle!!!!! She will say "Gaubrielle"!!!!! I think it is the most funniest thing!!!!!

Ugh. I am from Wisconsin, and yes, I have read a few comments on here making fun of how people from Wisconsin talk, especailly saying the word "bag". I live in Oregon now, and I get made fun of the way I talk when I talk to other people, especially my friends. I have lived here long enough now that I'm starting to pick up on the way people pronounce things here, so when I come home, my parents complain that I am saying things wrong. It's like I never win!

Another thing is when people leave of the -ed on words. It's whippED cream, not whip cream. I don't like whip cream, I like whipped cream.
