You might be hearing the song, "Rescue Me" a lot today, with the news of the passing of Fontella Bass. She's the singer that originally recorded the song.
When you listen to or read the lyrics of that song, it seems so old fashioned compared to some of the pop songs today. It's a woman talking about how she needs a man to rescue her, because she's lonely and blue and needs a man by her side.
Take me in your arms
Rescue me I want your tender charm
'Cause I'm lonely And I'm blue
I need you And your love too
Come on and rescue me
Song lyrics from female artists are so different today. Now we sing, "We are never ever getting back together" or "I'm Miss Independent."
In my opinion, that song has lasted because it taps into a feeling that we all have, deep down inside, we all want to be rescued.
We just happen to look to the wrong places to be rescued. We look to boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, and wives, maybe even food, or drinks to rescue us, to fulfill us. (At least I have.)
I've found the only thing that can truly rescue me, and fulfill me is having a relationship with God.
We've just been singing that song to the wrong person. Maybe we can get Mandisa to record "Rescue Me", and turn it into a worship song! :-)
