Epic Fail

You Gotta Laugh At Life, Otherwise...

I had what they call an Epic Fail moment this week. I forgot it was Picture Day at my son's school. So now preserved for eternity will be my son in a yearbook with messy hair and a t-shirt that says, "It Wasn't Me."

After school when I picked him up and I got that proof and it hit me. My face must have turned very pale, my heart started racing, I felt like every parent and teacher in that school were now judging me because I forgot.  It wasn't even about my poor son, he didn't care.

For some reason I took it as a personal failure and something else that the school would judge me about.  Of course the single, working, mom would make a mistake like that. His t-shirt saying of "It Wasn't Me" should have had the subtitle underneath "it was my overextended mom."

For some reason, I feel like I have to work even harder, have everything more perfect to make up for the fact that our family doesn't look perfect.  But, when I got home, relaxed, I really looked at that picture, I saw my son's sweet smile, and I realized that's all that matters.

He's happy. I could choose to get mad and cry about it, or just laugh and proudly frame it and put it up on the wall as a reminder, not to ever forget picture day again!

Yes, I understand.  Same thing happened to me last year.  My son was a 4th grader and forgot to bring his Tuesday folder home one week and it had the picture day order form and date.  Which was the next Tuesday so I did not get the notice until that Tuesday and the photo had already been taken.

I was mortified.  I went straight to the photographers office to order the pictures.  There he was....messy hair that had needed a trim and a red shirt that in big letters said Tom & Jerry with a big print of the cat and the mouse.  I had to just take a deep breath and laugh.  That is what he looked like that day and he had a big sweet smile and he didnt care one bit.  So i guess it happens, and perfection is just an image that we cannot live up to.  Boy, that was hard to learn.  Its nice to know that I am not the only one that has happened to.  Enjoy the sweet smile and on that day, that is what he looked like.

I remember my mom forgot for my 4th grade picture.  I ended up wearing a shirt with a picture of ET on it.  I laugh about it to this day. It is something I will always remember. So don't fret over it.  It will be a great memory for you and your son to laugh about in years to come.

I can so relate (and I'm sorry - I laughed/cried at your post). I once forgot to send my son to school on the first day. The principal called and...
This morning, I cooked a pancake with my chin. (I flipped it toward myself and the hot batter spilled all over) These beautiful blisters are now a part of my permanent record (I renewed my license today, three weeks overdue). Tomorrow is a job interview ("Yes sir, cooking a pancake with my chin is not one of my best skills .... I'm not normally a greenish-yellow, I'm just wearing burn salve all over my face for this special ocassion.")

I love this picture and wouldn't call it a fail at all. It makes me sad that you think it's a fail because it shows your son as you will really want to remember him at this age.  This is real.  Dressed up, false perfectly poised pictures are not real but are only a depiction of who we think others think we should be. Based on this picture, I think your family looks "perfect". Smile
