The story behind "Blessings"

Her new song "Blessings" has touched many K-LOVE listener's hearts - worship leader Laura Story!  Her new CD Blessings comes out April 12th.  Here are more pictures of her visit.

Lisa & Eric asked her about the heartache that led to "Blessings".  Here is her response and her singing the song live on K-LOVE.

The first time I heard this song, I just sucked in my breath. I knew what was coming, and I didn't want her to sing it. But God affirmed again that He is using the hard times I'm in to His purposes, and they ARE the blessings. Thanks for the honesty, Laura.

I wish I could have called in this morning when you had Laura Story and her husband on the show. I would like for her hear another testimony of how her song "Blessings" has ministered to others. My husband heard this song one of the first times that K-Love played it and came home with like 10 of the lyrics and asked me if I knew it and could I sing it at church. He has been dealing with chronic pain over the past 5 years(and he is only 42), which in turn has led to physical, spiritual, and emotional struggles for both of us as well as our 2 children(ages 11,& 8). This song touched his heart as a reminder that God is in control and knows exactly what is happening in our lives. This past Sunday, our Pastor played a video of "Blessings" during morning worship. We had a dear sister in the Lord who had been battling pancreatic cancer for a little over a year and this took a turn for the worse last week. Pastor played the video in order to encourage each of our hearts not only about Barb, but our own individual struggles.  The song brings tears to our eyes but is so truthful, because we know it's not really "what if" as the song says but "because" tials of this life are His mercies in disguise.

I can't help but feel that I have a connection with Laura. My father had brain cancer in 2004 and we lost him. However, in 2006, my son was diagnosed with brain cancer. God helped us through that horrible time. But in the end, my son calls it a blessing because of his Faith and what he has been able to do as a cancer survivor. At age 22, he has raised thousands of dollars for the hospital that helped him. More importantly, he goes and visits the hospital and the same 5th floor of the UNC Chapel Hill hospital and visits the children that are there. He brings his baseball team friends and they brighten up those kids days like you would not believe.
Thanks Laura for writing such songs as "Blessings" and others. You may not know how many hearts you touch, but mine is one of them.
God Bless you and your husband for many years to come.

I truly love her song Indescribable....It describes exactly how I feel about God's creation and who He has been in my life....I first heard this song when I started to attend church again and I just felt so unworthy but when Chris sang "You know the depths of my heart and you love me the same" I cried. So anytime I need to remember that God is always surrounding me I look out the window, sing this song and take pleasure in the magnificence of His Creation! Thank you Laura!

First time I heard this song I was driving in the car with my fiance and tears were streaming down my face. I was so choked up by this song. It spoke very deep to my heart and all the issues that so many of us face on a day to day basis. Thank you for writing about this Laura!

This song is such an answer to prayer for me! After being in full time ministry for 11 years, I came down with a severe case of Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome.  I was devastated!  Here I am, 25 years later, and I still have it.  I was a very, healthy, vibrant, athletic woman and everything had been taken away.  So many people think there's something wrong with me if God is not healing me.  But over and over again in the past 25 years, God has ASSURED me that He is in this. That this was His plan for me - to show me that He loves me regardless of what I do. His blessings DO come through tears and brokenness. I am sooo much closer to Him now than when I was so busy for Him before. I'm now involved in the prayer ministry in our church and love sharing my story with others and helping them go deeper with God through hard times. Thank you Laura, for sharing your story through this song.  It has been such a blessing for me!  God bless you!!

Thank you Laura for inspiring me this morning! As a brain cancer survivor of almost two years it was like I heard the song blessings in a new way after you talked about your husband. Your words brought tears to my eyes because I'm reminded that God blesses me in ways I don't realize. Sometimes subtle, sometimes profoundly, but always consistent like His love for us.

God bless,

Thank you Laura for putting into beautiful words what so many of need to realize.  The line, "what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know you're near" speaks most to me.  It is so true that intimacy with God often comes best through the trials we experience.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for having Laura Story on your show this morning.  Every time I hear "Blessings" it tugs at my heart, but this morning after hearing her testimony about her husband and what they have gone through, it totally blessed me.  My husband has been dealing with major health issues for the last six years and can no longer work.  This past summer he had a portion of his lung removed because they thought the tumor that was there was cancerous.  Thankfully it was not, but we are in the midst of a mighty struggle with his health with new things being diagnosed every day it seems.  We feel exactly what she and her husband are feeling.  We are praying for my husband's miraculous healing, but know whatever we are going through, God is right there with us, showing us the little miracles and blessings along the way.  Thank you for being faithful, Lisa, Eric and Laura!  Smile  Andy

Laura Story's sone "Blessings" is my favorite song right now.  I am struggling so hard in my life right now that I need to hear that song to remind me that all the stuff that is going on could actually be "blessings in disguise!"  I am trying to look at life that way, and usually can, but some days I just want to ask "WHY?" And today is one of those days.  I could listen to her sing that song all day.  I actually painted a huge sunshine on canvas and painted the words to the chorus across it.  It is hanging in my bathroom and I look at it everyday.  Thank you Laura, for writing such a beautiful, meaningful song.  YOU are a Blessing.

I cannot begin to tell you how much that song impacted me. We have been through the most difficult three year journey. My sister-in-law was diagnosed in July of 2008 with Sarcoma (cancer of the soft tissue/muscle) and in April of 2009, my brother (her husband) was diagnosed with colon/rectal cancer. After their battle, Doug received his ultimate healing on January 23rd and Connie eight weeks later on March 13th.

The song touched me so much. It brings such a healing message to my soul.

My thirteen year old daughter is struggling with being a teen and she is struggling with God. Her dad committed sucide four years ago and she is now starting to miss him and questioning everything God, her friends, me school. She goes to a privite christian school so there is alot of pressure to be perfect and alot of friends back stabbing her. She said to me, " mom I have been praying for God to help me but he is not answering, he does not care about me! I dont trust him and I dont trust you anymore either", she went on to say, "I wish daddy was here then at least I would have one parent that wouldnt push the GOD Thing on me". She is really spiritually struggling. Me and my daughter are huge music people (i listen to Klove all day long at work) when I heard Lauras song blessings, it spoke about Everything my daughter is struggling with. I sat her down and had her listen to it. She bawled her eyes out.It really spoke to her. She is tring really hard to do better. She is going to a therapist now and she is working hard on her friendships and her attitude with me and she is bringing her grades up. I know this is not all because of Lauras song but it sure was a beauitful tool to help a broken hearted mama out> Thank You so much Laura for writting such a beauitful song and sharing it the monent I needed help with my baby. God Blees you always.

This song speaks SO much to our situation right now. We have been trying to have children for the last 6 years and recently had 2 precious foster girls we were hoping to adopt, but they went back to their family. It is so HARD sometimes to just do normal things when I see and hear them everywhere. But we know that God works all things together for His good and we pray for our angels every day. He has a plan for our lives and theirs! Jeremiah 29:11  Some nights are sleepless and all we can do is know that He is holding them and us. "What if my greatest disappointments or the aching of this life is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy? What if the trials of this life, the rain, the storms, the hardest nights, are Your mercies in disguise?" Thank you Laura for letting God use you to speak to His people!

I heard this song a few days after I lost my nephew to suicide. While I don't know how God may use this tragedy I can be sure He will and already is in little ways. Pray for healing for my sister and for her salvation. My nephew accepted the Lord the night before he died and although I know her getting saved won't take away the pain and heartache I know Jesus will carry her when she gives her life to Him.

I have loved this song since the first time I heard it on K-Love.  It was playing when I was looking at a picture from 2004 of 8 people on a mission trip in Honduras, and I wept openly about the blessings of sorrow I know have happened since then in these people's lives. I had already asked for your CD for mother's day this year. This morning, I woke up early, felt great, turned on K-Love. When I heard the beginning of your song, and Lisa saying, "Laura Story" ... I thought it was a pre-recorded segment of Inside The Music.  When I realized it was LIVE, and you were THERE, and you were about to SING your song for us (!!!!) I was thrilled that the Lord invited me to the performance. I praised Him and wept the whole time you sang, Laura.  May His ministry through you be increased and show you all the worth of every blessing He has given to mold you. May my prayer for you, be shown also to me and to all His people, everywhere. May we see the worth of His disguised blessings, and praise Him all the more.

I am so grateful for the gift of Laura's song and the story behind it.  I, myself, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor 8 years ago. It was thru faith, love and family that I survived surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.  While my life has gone thru many ups and downs since then I face new blessings and mercies today.  I am back on chemotherapy due to a recurrence.  At the same time of this news I met the most loving, compassionate godly man.  While he could have left and taken an easier path, God brought us together with perfect timing.  Rick and God have been steadfast by my side thru the good days and the bad days.  We pray for healing but recognize the beauty of every day.  We pray for 60 years together (until I'm 100 and he is 108) but are blessed with each moment we share.  Thank you to Laura - your faith, passion, and endurance touch my heart.

WOW!  I can relate to Laura on SO MANY LEVELS! She has put my thoughts into a song.  I have been married to the worlds most wonderful man for 20 years now and 16 years ago he developed a lung disease that ravishly took his health.  While many question why God has not healed him or told us that there must be some hidden sin to keep him from his complete healing, I DISAGREE! There have been so many blessings that have come from him illness.  There has been so many opportunities to share God's faithfulness to others that are struggling with questioning situations, but I KNOW A GOD who will NEVER LEAVE US OR FORSAKE US.  Please tell Laura...THANK YOU! I pray that God will open up the windows of heaven and pour out countless blessings on her and her hubby and that they will find peace in their storm.  Our families motto is "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...It's learning how to dance in the rain"  Dance Laura...Dance!

My friend just told me about this song and advised me to watch the video.  My husband has been going through months of health problems.  Ever since I heard this song, it has been reverberating throughout my whole being.  It spoke everything I needed to hear.  I believe with all my heart God is doing good things in our lives whether or not we ever understand or whether or not we ever see the results we long to see.  Thank you, Laura!
