God is Faithful

God Will Never Give You More Than You Can Handle
Paul tells us: "God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength but with your testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). Over time that promise has become abbreviated to "God will never give you more than you can handle." Like many others, I've derived comfort from these words, though I know God does not "give" me loss, pain and grief.
Like most bumper-sticker theology, this promise appeals to my concerns about myself and my well-being. If I take Paul's words and God's faithfulness seriously, I must also look beyond my self-centeredness to the pain and severe testing others endure. What of the hungry, the abused, the victims of racism? What of the people of the world who have known no other life than a daily existence of war and terror? Could it be that God could use me to provide a "way out" for the hopeless? Could I help others handle life?

A better bumper sticker might be: "God is faithful."

I could not agree more.  Back in the 90's I had gone in for a physical.  Was now a single mom.  The doc asked if I wanted an certain test done and I said "if my insurance covers it, Sure what could it hurt"  A week later I got a call from my doc, he wanted me to come in.  I learned that day that my life would change forever.  My mother told me "God never gives you more then you can handle" I told her I really thought he messed up this time.  I am here to tell you--coming up on 16 years later--I am doing great.  I am re-married and have another child.  I am thankful for God allowing me to get this illness.  He knew this is what it was going to take to open my eyes.  But here is the cool part of the story--that night I learned I would never get better...I dropped to my knees in my hallway, I cried and yelled out "WHY ME GOD!" In a split second I heard in my head "why not you" and I got this calm feeling that I have never ever felt before in my whole life.  And just like that, I never shed another tear over it.  I was done.  I know that God was with me in that hallway that night.  He was just waiting for me to cry out to him so he could hold me.  I am so thankful

My wonderful Mother is 92 years old and constantly tells me "God fits the back for the burden."  So many times I felt like I had the weight of the world and then some on my shoulders. If I take  just a second to remember that my yoke is easy and my burden light...I have not a care in the world.

I always hear people use this verse as a basis for saying that God will never give us more than we can handle. However, I believe this verse to mean that God gives a way of escape from TEMPTATION. My personal opinion is that God ALWAYS gives us more than we can handle. If we could handle it, we wouldn't need Him. I believe His ultimate desire is for us to depend on Him completely. It is during times of arrogance (thinking I'm doing just fine)that I find God allows something in my life to happen that will get my focus off of myself and back on to Him.
