Antioxidents--what are they and where do I get them?!

Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Nicholas Perricone are two of the country's leading advisors in health and beauty.

Both of them recommend high-antioxidant superfruits for their skin cell-protective properties.

Antioxidants are the body's only way to combat the harmful oxidative effects of pollutants and sun damage at the cellular level.

Their advice is to eat plenty of "superfruits" with rich, dark and bright colors. The superfruits are known to have a high ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity).

Two of the highest ORAC superfruits are blueberries and acai berries. This smoothie combines them both into a single, nutrient-balanced and delicious drink that is a great breakfast or even a post-workout meal replacement.

Beauty is NOT Skin Deep

We are all bombarded with images of what the world would have us believe is 'beautiful' - it is a trap that we can all too often find ourselves caught in. If you struggle with what you look like, you're caught. If you are constantly concerned about how others see you, you're caught. If you have issues with what others look like, you're caught. My intention in writing this is not to make you feel guilty, but to help set you free, to help see how beauty is defined in God's eyes.

It's funny how much emphasis we put on the things in life that are temporal, things that fade away so quickly. The pressure and anxiety you feel to 'live up' to these standards is exhausting, like a hamster wheel, it leads nowhere. Trying to 'live up' to these standards never leaves you feeling satisfied.

So give yourself a break, and take just a moment to reflect on how God defines 'beauty.' What matters the most is what's on the "inside." In 1 Samuel 16:7, the Bible says, "People look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." A life focused on "who you are," rather than "what you look like" is  what 'matters most' to the 'one that matters most.'

There Can Never Be A More Beautiful You

Standing in the check-out line at the grocery store last night, I saw images of "perfect" women and headlines that promised that "The Flat-belly Diet," would get rid of my post-baby pooch and the miracle workout that would help me "Lose 10 Pounds" this month. I could achieve "perfection" if I tried hard enough. This message is repeated over and over on TV, in movies, in magazines and even, at times, in our own families.

That is why I am so grateful for those in the fashion and image industry who are willing to speak up about the unrealistic expectations that are placed on women in our culture. Model Carre' Otis has recently revealed that she was severely sleep-deprived, near starvation and using drugs at the height of her career. She has said that she often got letters from fans. She said “There was one type of letter that consistently left me uneasy: the type that made up about 80 percent of my fan mail, it was the one from the young girl in the age range of 10 to 15, seeking my advice about how to become what I was only pretending to be. They wanted my tips and my beauty ‘secrets.’ But I wasn't willing to reveal the real secrets: the destructive behaviors and inner torment. I was keeping those secrets not only from my earnest fans but from myself as well.”

A modeling agency is trying to change this unhealthy trend in our culture by hiring models sized 2-12 and promoting the idea that beauty comes in all different shapes and sizes. Yes! Thank you!

I am so grateful that there are those who are brave enough to say "Enough is enough!" But, I am most grateful that we have a God who "knit us together in our mother's womb" (Ps. 139:13) and who says "You are beautiful!" As Johnny Diaz sings in his song "More Beautiful You," "You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do, so there could never be a more beautiful you."
