Lean Summer Countdown!

7 Weeks to Summer-

CHRISTINE AVANTI’S ULTRA LEAN SUMMER COUNTDOWN

Over the next seven weeks Christine Avanti, celebrity nutritionist, chef and author of Skinny Chicks Don’t Eat Salads will be giving you slim down tips as we count down to an ULTRA LEAN SUMMER.

FAMILY DINNERS CAN HELP YOU SLIM DOWN! According to research, eating dinner as a family on a regular basis has some substantial health benefits. While dining together family bonds become stronger, children are more secure and confident, family members eat more nutrition packed meals, and everyone is less likely to be overweight. Given these positive benefits, I must encourage everyone reading this blog to PLEASE make an effort to cook and dine together as a family as often as possible. For the last 30 years, we've stopped having family dinners and we've eaten many of our meals on the road or from take out. And look what has happened to our country - we've got an obesity epidemic. A recent study showed that families that didn't sit for dinner together were at much higher risk for obesity. The time is now to get back to the family dinner. The number one complaint I hear from clients is that they are too busy to have dinner as a family. My response: PLANNING AND TEAMWORK!

1) Grocery shop for your favorite healthy staples at least once a week. (see shopping list on last week’s blog post).

2) Enlist the entire family to help in the meal and kitchen preparation. Prepping the food, setting the table, washing the cooking utensils as you are preparing the meal. Become a delegator; maybe your son or daughter can’t chop vegetables but they can help you by washing the veggies before you chop them.

3) Prepare quick and simple meals by grilling or using frozen seafood such as frozen shrimp (takes only 2 minutes to defrost).

4) Say grace before you eat. This will help slow you down and put everything into perspective. Prayer before meal time helps us to shift the focus from feeling rushed to feeling grateful, peaceful and self controlled.

Political Ad Lie Detector

Super PAC App' knows when political ads stretch the truth. CNN

What if every political ad came with a "truthiness" disclaimer?

That's essentially the goal of the Super PAC App, a new project from former students at MIT's Media Lab.

Their free iPhone app, which will be available on Wednesday, listens to political advertisements on television and matches the ad's audio waves against a database -- much like the Shazam app identifies music. It then tells the app's user who paid for the ad and how much they're spending on the campaign before pointing them to nonpartisan sources -- PolitiFact, FactCheck.org and others -- to try to verify the ad's claims.

The app is free of advertising and is funded in full by a grant from the Knight Foundation, according to Dan Siegel, one of the app's co-creators.

Mandisa on Good Morning America with TobyMac

'American Idol' Singer Loses 100 Pounds After Simon Cowell Remark. Good Morning America

When Mandisa Hundley auditioned for "American Idol" in 2006 she thought it would be her chance to make it big in music.

Instead, the opportunity turned into heartbreak, thanks to a comment from then-judge Simon Cowell.

As Hundley, 35, stood before the judges, Cowell, known for his often brutal appraisals of contestants, commented not on Hundley's soulful sound, but her size.

"Do we have a bigger stage this year?" he said.

"It was just hurtful and mean and the one thing I didn't want to have happen," Hundley said.

The gospel singer, who told Cowell on that show that she forgave him, also took Cowell's words to heart and changed her life.
