Did you splurge on Easter eating?!

You splurged on Easter?  Do this to get back on track….

1) Eat regular meals-starving yourself will only lead to bingeing.  Sadly, most people feel the need to punish themselves with starvation after a holiday because they feel guilty for overeating.  Unfortunately this will only slow down metabolic rate.  Don’t walk in guilt, instead walk in victory and nourish your body with healthful food.

2) Munch on cucumbers and celery.  These vegetables are natural diuretics and they help rebalance the body’s electrolytes.  They are also low in sugar so they won’t spike insulin levels.

3) Drink peppermint tea (hot or cold), it helps banish bloating and gas.  Tea is also packed with powerful antioxidants (EGCG) that help boost metabolism.

Weekend spring time healthy snack the entire family will enjoy:

Santorini Lemon Feta Dip with Kalamata Cucumber Relish with Pita Chips

At only 126 calories, it’s the perfect weekend snack!  It’s also great with a iced peppermint tea.  Get the recipe here!

Christine Avanti on gluten-free diets...do they work? Are they healthy?

What’s the Story with Gluten Free Diets?

Blame Hollywood.  In 2009 svelte starlet Gwyneth Paltrow blogged about her gluten-free Detox, which caused celeb followers to root out gluten in hopes of transforming their bodies.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.  So a gluten free diet means no bread, no cereal, no pasta, no beer, and no soy sauce (unless they are specifically made “gluten free”).  Because of this new trend the gluten free market is now worth several billion dollars and has increased by 17% in the past 2 years.

Before this g-free diet trend hit the scene, only a few people were eating a g-free diet, those diagnosed with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that makes it difficult to digest gluten.  According to a recent study in the Annals of Medicine, more and more people are being diagnosed with celiac (1 in 133 people).  In celiac suffers, gluten causes damage in the lining of the small intestine, causing gas, bloating, diarrhea and headaches.

If you have intolerance to gluten, you would be best to avoid it.  However, if you have decided to avoid gluten to transform your body, be warned that avoiding gluten on a regular basis can cause a vitamin B deficiency, because wheat is rich in thiamine and other Bs.

Listen here to what Christine had to say.

Here is a super mega delicious gluten free recipe from celeb chef and nutritionist Christine Avanti.
