What is YOUR family recipe?

We saw an article recently that stressed the importance of passing family recipes along to the next generation and it got us thinking...what is YOUR family recipe that you are passing along to your kids? Is there a story behind it? Tell us about it (and share the recipe, if you dare!)!

Homemade Tacos. My Brothers and I always loved this reciepe when our mom would make it. We either had the fried corn or flour tortillas. Then the next day leftovers was normally made into a burrito that could travel well. Smile I would take them to work wrapped in foil and heat them on the manifold of the crane I was working with on that day. Man I could go for one today! I think I will make them tonight for dinner. The only changes are not frying the flour tortillas and I use ground turkey instead of beef.

When my daughter was turning 6, she asked me to make Chinese food for her special birthday dinner. Our family loves eating out and ordering lettuce wraps, but eating out with 6 kids can be super expensive. So I created this Asian Lettuce Wrap recipe for her birthday dinner and everyone who tries it says it's better than PF Changs!! They are SO yummy!!

I decorated it with colorful paper and some great family pics and it was a great gift! It was practical but also a momentum. Smile My favorite are her cherry kolaches, yummy!

One of our favorite  recipes is Lebanese family recipes is:

Rice and Green Beans

1 1/2 pounds cubed round steak
2 -14 1/2 oz. cans green beans
1 large onion cut in slivers
1 large can tomatoes
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

2 cups rice
4 cups water
1-teaspoon salt
1/4-cup butter

Cut steak into 1-inch cubes and braise in pot. When meat is brown, add onions and cook until they are soft. Add green beans, including liquid, and cook uncovered for 30 minutes over medium heat. Add canned tomatoes, salt and pepper. Cook for 30 minutes or until liquid has evaporated. Cook rice. Serve hot.

To cook rice, melt butter in medium pot. Add rice, salt and water. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to simmer rice until done. Some times you may need to add a small amount of extra water so that the rice will be fully cooked.

Both my mom and my grandmother are amazing cooks, but use very few 'recipes'. My mom just throws things together and they're great. I don't want to lose any of these great recipes, so whenever she makes a favorite recipe, I make her measure everything, and we write it all down. Then I type up the recipe and have a digital copy that can be printed and e-mailed. My goal is to get all of my mom's recipes digitized, so we'll always have them and can very easily give copies to whomever we want, and they'll never get lost. This recipe is for my mom's favorite cake, Pineapple Delight.

Pineapple Delight
Mary Ellen Wilkison
Yield: 13”x9”x2”

½ lb graham cracker crumbs
½ cup butter, softened
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
2 eggs
1 20oz can crushed pineapple
1 8 oz package whipped topping

1.  Spread graham cracker crumbs in bottom of 13”x 9”x 2” pan, reserving 1T for garnish.
2.  Cream together butter, sugar and eggs.
3.  Layer the butter mixture over graham crackers, then pineapple, whipped topping and the reserved crumbs on top.
4.  Chill for several hours to allow layers to ‘combine’.

I was just on my way home from work and heard you on the radio talking about passing down family recipes. I wanted to share that my mom, who is a wonderful Christian woman, has a terminal illness and may not have many months left before going home to be with the Lord. She is such an inspiration and is not wasting a minute of the time God is giving her. Right now she is working to publish a cookbook of her favorite family recipes as a parting gift to all of us. The really special thing is that along with the recipes, she is also including little stories about the significance of each one. What a special gift this precious cookbook will be for all who know her! Thanks for letting me share!

This is not a recipe directly, just a story about recipes. I am from a family of 6 kids - oldest is 62 and youngest is 43. Our 2nd to the youngest sister died 5 years ago at the age of 40 unexpectantly. She now lives in glory with the Lord. Before she died she began working on a family recipe book with recipes going back a couple of generations. She died before she finished and one of the grandchildren started working on it and presented to my 83 year old mom at Christmas.  This books contains recipes going back a number of generations, along with geneology and history of both sides of our family.  We have recipes old and new from family and friends.  It contains my deceased sister's side notes concerning the recipe of the person that submitted it.  The book dedicated to her memory in honor of my mother.  What a rich treasure!  Each child and grandchild of my parents wrote a note about what it meant growing up in "mimmaws" kitchen, and about my sister.  It will brings tears to your eyes when you read it, no matter who you are.  I would encourage everyone to undertake such a worthwhile project for their family.  Even if it starts with you!  We are blessed to come from such a rich and blessed heritage.

Relating to girl scout cookies AND family recipes...

First off, I'm a thin mint fanatic and when I can't buy them, I make them!

Here's how easy this is!

Get some of the Andes Mint baking chocolate and melt it all up, and then dip Ritz snack crackers in the chocolate and let them dry on some wax paper. They are amazing!!

I married into a family of amazing cooks!! They are always giving out there recipies, any good one I have is from them. I on the other hand have burned water, and the pot! A few years ago evryone decided to have thanksgiving at my house I freeked out. It meant I would be cooking the turkey, whitch is easy enough but, what would I stuff it? My moms stuffing was yuck! Defanitly not to be served to these chefs. But It was the only one I knew how to cook, So I impravised a little old with a little new.\
I sautaed my moms basics the onions and celery, some sausage and,... my secret ingrediant.
The dressing was perfect not to soggy and tons of flavor.  They loves it!! Fianly something of mine they liked.  They would ask so. is there onions in this, yes. Did you use sausage? yep.    For Three years thanksgiving was at my house, and for tree years I keept the great recipe to myself.
This last year my brother in law was staying with us, and on thankgiving as every one was onece again raiving over the great stuffing he went to the trash can and pulled out the boxes.. of stove top stuffing.   OOPS!  They all laughed, I was emberrased but, finaly everyone left with my recipe.

Saute onions and celery in butter untel clear. Add your favorite sage sausage midway. when cool mix in a couple boxes of savery hurb stove top stuffing.  I let it merinate overnight in a sealed container and stuff the turkey in the morning.  If you want to bake it seperate you'll need to add a little hot water to moisten the bread crumbs before you bake.  Hope you enjoy!!!
God bless

Julie from a family of great cooks!!!

Part of my childrens graduation gift from high school was a family cookbook. I printed out their favorite (and some of the family favorite) recipes on 4x6 index cards and put them in a book made just for that purpose.  They took the book with them when they went to college.  I get cell phone calls from them at the grocery store with questions as to what to buy, or where to look for an ingredient (so funny), for the casserole, dessert, or whatever they are cooking that night for dinner.  Through the years since they have asked for specific recipes to be sent to them on 4x6 cards so they can add them to the book.  My daughter recently asked me to email her the folder of recipes so she can prepare a book for bridal shower gifts for 2 friends that are to be married this next summer!  What a great compliment!

When my husband and I got married, my mother found a website that you can write all your recipes and they make it into a hard cover cook book. So she got all of not only my entire family recipes, but contacted my husbands entire family and added them to the book as well. It is a beautiful book, and she also added definitions in the back so i know exactly what to do! If anyone is looking to preserve their recipes, the website is blurb.com and it is well worth it!

I had a wonderful grandmother who not only passed her love of cooking on to her family but, thankfully, also her love of God. When she visited with us, she never failed to have the kitchen smelling of cinnamon raisin bread. As this is not made in a bread machine, it takes most of a day to make (the majority of the time is the time it takes to rise). Granny had her recipe in her head but never written down. One day while she measured out in her usual method of "a pinch of this, a dab of that and a handful of this", mother stood close by, measured each ingredient in cups/teaspoons and wrote each one down. Thanks to mothers efforts in recording the measurement of each ingredient, grannys recipe will be passed from generation to generation.  There is at least one person from each generation, from Granny to her great-randchildren who love to make this bread (and we all love to eat it).

Cinnamon Raisin Bread

3 pkg yeast
1 1/2  cups scalded milk (cooled to lukewarm))
2 cups warm water
2 tsp salt
1/2 cup shortening, melted
1 3/4 cups sugar
6 tsp cinnamon
5 lbs flour
2 cups dark raisins, soaked

Dissolve yeast in 1/2 lukewarm water.  Mix eggs with remaining water and milk. Combine yeast mixture and eggs, add salt, shortening, sugar and cinnamon stirring to mix well.  Pour about 5 pounds white all purpose flour into a mixing bowl and make a hole in the center.  Pour liquid ingredients into hole and begin working flour into liquid ingredients.  Before dough is too stiff, drain raisins well and mix into dough.  Turn dough onto a floured board and knead until dough will not stick to hands, adding flour as needed.  Turn into a greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.  Punch down, cover and let rise again until doubled in size.  Punch down, divide into four equal portions and shape into loaves.  Place into greased loaf pans, cover and let rise in a warm place until dough rises about 1/2-inch above edge of pans.  Uncover and baked in preheated 305 degree oven 45 minutes.  Remove from over and brush with melted butter.  Turn pans onto sides to allow steam to escape.  Remove bread from pans when cool.  Note:  Place a skillet of water on lower rack of oven while baking to produce a softer crust

Scott and Kelly,I really enjoyed talking to you earlier about "Chocolate Gravy". K-Love brightens my mornings and evenings as I told you I listen to you on my hour long commute to and from work.Recently I took the 30 day challenge to listen to only Christian radio. It has changed my life! I have been a Christian for many years but your programs bless and encourage me so much. God bless you all. Now I'll share the Chocolate Gravy recipe: Sally's Chocolate Gravy

  4 measured Tbsp.cocoa
  1/2 c. self rising flour
  1 cup sugar
  3 cups milk
  Pinch salt

Mix cocoa, sugar and salt together first, then add flour.Add 1 cup of milk:stir until all ingredients are dissolved. Stir over medium heat occassionally, then add the other 2 cups milk slowly. When mixture starts to boil, stir frequently as it will thicken quickly. Remove from heat when desired thickness is achieved. Serve over hot biscuots and enjoy! Chocolate lovers BEWARE!!!
My memory of Chocolate Gravy: When we were kids, my Mom(Sally Isaacs) would make this occasionally for us as a treat. My Mom was a great cook and even greater Christian Mother.I miss her every day but I feel I have a part of her from her special recipes she left behind..... I would like to submit this recipe in her memory.

I wasn't able to post during your show because I was driving but your family recipe discussion got me to thinking about the family "pot" that we have.  It was my grandmother's and as a young girl she would let me pick my birthday dinner.  I always chose roast beef, potatoes, and carrots.  I looked so forward to that dinner!  As I grew older, I came to realize that no matter what my grandmother made in the pot, it was delicious.  In my mind, she was the best cook ever.  When she passed away, my mother inherited the pot and to my amazement, whatever she cooked in that pot was delicious!  When I become a mother, I made my mother promise that I would be the one to inherit that pot.  My mother died suddenly and very unexpectedly.  My brother and I spent many hours sorting through my parents history as we prepared to move our father into long term care and I asked my brother if he minded if I had the family pot.  He responded, "of course, you are the cook of the family".  Today, I use the pot and no matter what I cook in it, it is delicious.  The pot is stained with love and it will be passed to my only daughter and from there to my oldest granddaughter.  There are over 70 years worth of meals made in the family pot...all of which have been delicious!

My father lived with me and my husband for the last three years of his life. He suffered from dementia among other things.  The ONE thing he never forgot....his LOVE of chocolate.  Out of self-preservation I learned to make these cookies that made him incredibly happy to eat!  They are SO stinkin' easy you won't believe it!

Double Chocolate Chocolate Chip
1 box Devils Food Cake Mix
2 large eggs
1/2 cup oil (olive oil makes them taste funny. These are not healty cookies so just use the vegetable oil and enjoy)
1/2 bag chocolate chips (or peanut butter chips or mint chips or m and m's or whatever makes you happy)

Stir together.
Roll in small balls
Bake in oven at 325-350 for 10-12 minutes depending on how you like your cookies...crispy or chewy.
In the summer add vanilla ice cream in between two cookies for ice cream sandwiches.

Kelly, I have 5 children and understand about disappointments. You should take the money you would spend at Dave and Busters, invest in a tent (unless you know someone who has one), invite friends - Alec's (LOL) and set up the tent in the backyard. Cold is good - lots of blankets, a battery operated lantern - or run an electric chord and just put a lamp out there. Under the stars is amazing. Let them eat cheap pizza, play games, tell stories, even have a fire in a fire pit and roast marshmellos. Some of the best memories are in the backyard with a tent. They will probably end up in the house eventually unless they're hard core. SO MUCH FUN!!!

A meal that always gave me comfort when I was growing up is Ham Hocks.

2 Ham Hocks - with a lot of meat on them
1 head of cabbage
2 bags of carrots
7-10 potatoes

In a large pot, boil the ham hocks until all the meat falls off, peal potatoes and carrots, cut to bite size. Remove all the bone and meat from the stock, cut meat to bite size. Add potatoes and carrots. When the potatoes and carrots are almost soft to eat, add sliced cabbage. Cook until cabbage is done. Pepper and salt to your liking.

The best thing is that you keep adding potaotes and carrots and it lasts forever. We still by our Ham Hocks at the store my parents did even though we are three states away.

No Scott, this is embarrassing- I sing in a Catholic choir but I'm not Catholic so I'm not really familar with all of the traditions. During Easter (which of course means there's more people than usual, like over 1,000) they sprinkle the holy water on the people. I wasn't aware that they sprinkle the choir as well, so when the guy in the white robe (deacon I think) flung that water at me (very hard too I must say, I'm suprised that the gold stick didn't fly out of his hand and hit me in the face)I was so shocked that I jumped back with my hands in the air and tried to stiffle a shreik because one: I was in church and two: there was a microphone right in front of me!

Feelings are personal.  To tell someone they weren't embarassed is discounting their feelings.

The goodness or badness of the act has nothing to do with it.

Passing gas is a normal human function.  Passing it in a crowded room might be embarassing.

Saving someones life is a good thing, but one can be embarassed by the praise or publicity generated by it.

So Scott, go ahead and be emabrassed, but also know you did a good job!

As long as you had fun and you fear God you shouldn't be embarrrassed. In ecclesiastes 5:7 it states, "Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead." You have nothing to worry about as, life is short and go with the flow. So it seemed embarrasing but you were living your life. At least you were bold enough to even do a rap. Some people are scared to be in front of that many people.
Life is short, live like you are going to die and enjoy every moment of your life. All you can do is laugh at yourself when life gets tough.

Peace and Love,

Hey guys! First I wanted to say that Scott, that was really awesome! I think you should do an encore at Spirit West Coast Monterey later this year!
Secondly, I was trying to call in but couldn't get through....I wanted to comment on your discussion on Nashville/USA coming together to help Haiti. I sponsor a child at the Hands and Feet Project, so this has been VERY close to my heart and I have spend the last week trying to fundraise and do what I can to spread the word. What I think is pretty amazing too is that Duncan Phillips, the Newsboys' drummer, has also pledged to give all profit made at his online store for the next month to the Hands and Feet Project. It's so nice to see other Christian musicians supporting each other and Haiti in this way. The thing unique about H&FP is that they were the first ones to ask the isolated town of Jacmel, Haiti, if they needed help...and because of the support received, they were able to bring in supplies by volunteer pilots who volunteered to use their planes. If it wasn't for them, Jacmel would still have no help.
To add some good news....Mark Stuart and his wife Aegis arrived back home to the the States today...a bittersweet return for them...but we welcome them home and praise God for their safety and for all they've done in Haiti!

Hey Scott! I'm not sure what everyone else is seeing or not seeing, but there's got to be some part of you that's awesome just to step out and do that.  IF YOU NEVER TRY SOMETHING YOU'VE NEVER DONE, YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DOING!!  I still think you're cool and so does God!

Your sister in Christ

You're cool, too, Kelli!

I think that that was not that embarrassing  because you knew the people you were rapping in front of. once at a over nignt school trip we were playing bingo and you had to dance in front of everybody. A new kid got a bingo and had to dance in front of everybody and he knew nobody.
I would not be embarrassed about what happened.

NOT EMBARRASING, but, to quote TobyMac(to SCC)"Well I think rap music is most defenitly YOU........NOT!!!!!!" (but you shouldn't really count my vote, i am NOT a person who really can swallow rap, i prefer yours over anything else, except TobyMac....)

I think you did great! I would have not been able to do it. You should be thankful that you were picked out of so many people. To me it would be an honor to be picked. I think is was so sweet to rap about your wife. I listen to ya'll every day. KLOVE keeps me encouraged when I am feeling low. Thanks for all the hard work you do.

Without knowing the story behind why you are up there, it looks as if you are just a really wonderful husband. Able to say "happy birthday" in an unconventinal way. I think that rocks! I'm sure I'd be a bit red cheeked to see my husband up there but, he has no skills.
I think it's WONDERFUL and so-o NOT embarrassing!

Congratulations, Scott!  I think you did a superb job.  The lyrics of your rap were well-worded despite the fact that you were not given enough time to prepare.  Your wife must have been very happy and proud.  You were able to think on your feet and did a wonderful job!

I'm not taking the time to view the video (too late already, should be in bed, etc.) however - I agree with the comment about feelings being personal.

Couple of thoughts - I seem to recall Toby's visit in December where he was cajoled into doing a freestyle rap for ugly Christmas sweaters, so perhaps that incident was payback, hmm?!

I probably would have been embarrassed & certainly felt foolish trying to do what you did.  Nevertheless, you were game enough to play along & you survived.  At least it's not something to regret in a negative sense.

So - chin up and know the memory will surely bring a smile & laughs for many people for some time to come.  "Those who can laugh at themselves will never cease to be amused."
