Spring cleaning!

It's springtime...which means spring cleaning! Many of us simply have too much stuff! Experts say if you haven't used it in a year, sell it! Any tips for getting rid of old items? What used items have you sold? Purchased?

I worked in the camp industry for 9 years, and the last year and a half I did summer and extended season.   One rule that I learned while working at a camp for kids with learning differences (like AD/HD) was the "one touch rule." First you pick a room, or corner of the room whatever the case may call for, and whatever you touch you have to do something with.. put it in the right place.. before you can put it down.  This is particularly helpful for the chronic pilers.. those that rearrange piles instead of actually cleaning.  If you truly have no where to put it, you have to find something to get rid of for this object to take it's spot.. or... get rid of said object.  It works if you work it!! Every Spring my church has a yard sale to benefit the missions and youth. Its the perfect opportunity to get rid of stuff. It seems like this year i've been "spring cleaning" all year long. I have piles of stuff in my garage, im just waiting to hear when and where i can drop it off. Hope its soon!! lol

I disagree with the "experts" about throwing away anything you haven't used in a year. Why should we be such a disposible society? I think hording is horrible and keeping things for a rainy day is wrong but I have many things that I keep because I will use it again and I don't want to have to buy it again at a higher price.

I recently read a magazine article about spring cleaning. The author suggested working very quickly, spending no more than 8 minutes per drawer when sorting. I used to dread cleaning, but now I've been working through each drawer with that 8 minute goal in mind, making lots of progress, reducing my clutter, and feeling really good that I got it done. Try it, it works!
