I graduated from Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, the home of the Profs. Unique enough? The school started out as a teachers college in 1923 and Prof being short for Professor brings a historical edge to the nickname. Our mascot is a wise old owl named "Whoo R U" after the popular song by The Who.

Austin High School in Austin, TX has a very peculiar mascot. They are the Austin Maroons, and the mascot that comes out to football games is a big puffy maroon ball. That's an odd mascot if I've seen one.

My daughter is on the drill team, no they are not called the dancing hippos (even though I think that would be cute) They are the Hi Steppers. My son played for the football team in middle school. so I have 2 proud hippos in my home. Every business in our town has a hippo in front of it (even the fire department has a dalmation hippo) Gotta love them Hippos!

I was born and raised in Chickasha, Oklahoma.  Our local mascot is the Fightin' Chick!  We were made fun of a lot...."let's fry the chicks!"  The mascot most of my years in school was a big yellow chicken with purple satin boxing trunks and purple boxing gloves.  For a few years they tried the "Booster Rooster" which was a big brown rooster.  I think now most of the representations of the school are just a giant letter C, but they are still called the Chicks!

I was listening and you reported that Stanford University had a cardinal bird and/or tree for a mascot.  In actuality, Stanford has no mascot; rather the Tree (a symbol of El Palo Alto, a Redwood Tree in Palo Alto) is part of the Stanford University Band.  The Cardinal refers to the color cardinal (red) and not a bird.  So, no mascot, colors of cardinal and white.  Just thought you might like to have the information correct.  God Bless.

I have one that I think will put all others to shame.  I am from Mansfield, Ohio and the Mansfield Campus of Ohio State University started competing in collegiate sports about 3 or 4 years ago but the question was what would our mascot be.  They held a vote for school mascot and the name that won was Twigs.  The administration did not like that so they went with the runner up which was the Mavericks.  But those of us that were there at the time still root for the Mansfield Fighting Twigs.

I grew up in North Little Rock, Arkansas.  Up until the late 90s there were two high schools: Northeast Chargers (white horse or lightning bolt)and Ole Main Wildcats.  In the late 90s they decided to make one campus for 9th and 10th graders and the other for 11th and 12th graders.  Instead of coming up with a whole new mascot they just mixed them.  Now they are the Charging Wildcats.

Actually, the mascot of UC Santa Cruz is not the Sea Slugs, but the Banana Slugs.  A true banana slug is about 3 inches long and produces a slime that will make your tongue go numb if you put in on there (which is a big hit in 8th grade science camp).  Our team plays UC Santa Cruz in basketball and the students bring giant salt shakers to the game, because of course if you put salt on a slug it will kill it.
