YES!!! Salt on watermelon and cantaloupe is the best!! I love it. The salt brings out the sweetness of the fruit. I have been eating both with salt all my life. Maybe it is a southern thing.

We have so much hidden salt in our food that we eat on a daily basis. I would be afraid to try it! I may like it to much. Smile I love my salt!

salt on watermelon absolutely YES...ice cold watermelon too. I agree with salt and pepper on cantelope too.  Salt on sliced apples.  Guess it is a southern thing to do.  In a day when we didn't have air conditioning, evidently the salt did something to help us endure the heat.

My parents always put salt on watermelon, so it doesn't seem strange to me (although I don't eat it that way anymore).  My mother-in-law puts pepper on her watermelon, which really seems strange to me!!

Having salt on your watermelon is like having french fries without.  Leave the salt for the fries.

I know we are supposed to be the salt of the earth, but lets not get carried away by putting it on watermelon. Smile

I actually like watermellon with or without salt. The salt adds a different flavor just don't go overboard with it. Nothing taste good with too much salt.
Salt is also good on cantelope or mushmellons.

Yes for the salt on watermelon. I think it might have something to do with a person being a salt eater or sweet eater. My husband would say no but then again he eats way to many sweets. I say yes but I eat to much salt.

Salt on watermelon--Absolutely!!  I have put salt on my watermelon as long as I can remember--brings the already great taste to the next level of yummyness! (I know that is not a real word--but I had to use it.)

Another good question is what do you put on grits. I go round & round with my mom who puts salt & pepper on them...for me, I put sugar in grits (& of course butter). I refuse to try grits with salt & pepper.

And for the watermelon sandwich...Ewwww! lol
7/5/2010 2:40:20 PM

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!   And....here is one for you. I had an 80 year old woman that I cared for once ask me to sprinkle sugar on her sliced tomato...which I turned my nose up at and said.."HUH?" She said after all...it WAS a fruit. I did try it....not to bad...but I would still rather have SALT!!

Yes, it actually can enhance the taste.  Especially if the watermelon is not that sweet, adding salt will help making it taste sweeter.  Not too much though... Smile

i dont know about salt directly on watermelon, but here is an amazing salad with watermelon, tomoatos and feta cheese!

2 cups watermelon chunks (seedless preferred)
2 cups vine-ripened cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
2 Tbls fresh chives, chopped
4 Tbls thin strips fresh basil
1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Salt, to taste
Freshly cracked pepper, to taste

Chill a salad bowl, then arrange the chunks of watermelon and halved tomatoes in the bottom.  Sprinkle feta, chives and basil over the top.
In a small bowl, whisk together the rice wine vinegar and the olive oil.
Pour the dressing over the salad, but do no toss!  This is a deconstructed salad, so it's important that the flavors remain separate.  Season to taste with salt and pepper.
    Makes 2 servings.  ( I think 4 servings)

They only have them in July and August, so I try to stop as often as I can to get one! When I was pregnant with my daughter they saw me on an almost daily basis for those two months!!! :o)

No Way, I personally think it's gross. Why ruin that sweet yummy taste of a good watermelon. My husbands puts salt on it - nasty.  I salted my tomatoes and he says "what's this, you are salting your tomato?"  Come on, a tomato and watermelon are totally different.  Even though a tomato is a fruit, it's more like a veggie.  Whose with me here?
7/27/2010 10:11:29 PM
joa United States
OH MY!  What happened to leaving fruits and vegetables the way God made them?  Unless you see a salt shaker attached to the watermelon vine, I'd say it's best to eat it the way it is.  The only reason we salt food is because we cook the life out of it along with the natural taste.  So we feel have to season it or put other condiments on it or we can't eat it. But raw fruits and veggies???  Why - it's almost sacrilegious - isn't it?   I say, go the natural way!  Plus, it's just not healthy.   Smile
