Healthy Superbowl snacks? Really?!

Super Bowl Sunday is one of my favorite food events of the year.   However, most of the snacks football fans enjoy are loaded with unhealthy fats that come from mayonnaise, cream cheese and sour cream.  Sadly, these fats stick to our blood vessels and clog our arteries which can lead to heart disease.

 

Here are some simple food swaps that will reduce the “bad” fat (saturated fat) content of your favorite super bowl recipe:

 

Salsa instead of cream based dip.

Guacamole (good fat) instead of queso dip.

Sub sandwich instead of pizza.

Baked or Popped chips instead of fried chips. (Popchips are yummy.)

Fruit platter instead of a cheese platter.

Air-popped popcorn instead of nuts. (Nuts are a "good" fat but very high in calories.)

Use non fat plain Greek yogurt instead of mayo or sour cream for making dip.

 

Swaps for recipes that call for mayo, cream cheese, sour cream and cheddar cheese.

 

Light Mayonnaise 3.5 grams fat

Instead of

Mayonnaise 10 grams fat

Serving size: 1 Tbsp.

 

Light Cream Cheese 4.5 gm fat

Non-fat Cream Cheese 0 gm fat

Instead of

Cream Cheese  9 gm fat

Serving size: 1 ounce

 

Light Sour Cream 2.5 gm fat

Non-fat sour cream 0 gm fat

Instead of

Sour cream 5 gm fat

Serving size: 2 tablespoons

 

Light Cheddar Cheese 4.5 gm fat

Non-fat cheddar cheese 0 gm fat

Instead of

Cheddar Cheese 9 gm fat

Serving size: 1 ounce

         Creekmore's Chili Cheese Dip

    1 lb ground beef

    1  c. taco sauce

    1 box Veleeta Cheese

    1 can Ro-Tel Tomatoes

    1 can chili without beans


  Brown ground beef. Drain and add taco sauce. Put in crock-pot. Add chopped Veleeta, Ro-Tel and chili. Cook until cheese is melted stirring occasionally. Serve with chips.

Velveeta is good for baked potatoes; to make a dip using a can of rotel and 1 lb. Velveeta; and for home made macaroni and cheese....it beats the boxed dinners 10 to 1....

Great little dessert/snack
put mini pretzels on a wax paper lined cookie sheet...then a Rollo on each pretzel...put in 250 degree oven for about 4 minutes (Rollos will look shiny)...then press a nut down in the center of each warmed Rollo...use any kind of nut you like...I'd use a variety (pecans,walnuts,almonds, etc.) for Super Bowl or other party. Let cool in frig for about 10 min.and ENJOY!

TACO BITES:
small filo cups
ground beef
taco seasoning
3/4 water
guacamole
cheddar cheese/shredded
salsa

put filo cups in 350 oven until lightly browned. Brown ground beef add taco seasoning as directed on package with 3/4 water. drain grease, add the cooked beef in filo cups, top with guacamole, cheese and salsa, eat em up!!

this is a must snack for my bf:
they are a British staple snack and are even served in pubs there

Sausage Rolls:
Breakfast sausage (sage is the best)
boiled eggs
raw egg
waterbread crumbs ( I use a mix of italian and cajun spice)

boil eggs then cool
beat 1 raw eggs for every six boiled eggs anf mix with 1 teasoon water

place bread crumb mix in flat tray or plate

wrap layer of sausage on boiled egg until covered
dip in egg and water batter, then roll in bread crumbs and deep fry in oil of choice

simple but here are the tricks to the perfect sausage egg
cut eggs in half and serve
in England they serve this with Branston pickle

1: egg must be cool and completely dry
2: sausage cannot be too thick it doesnt cook properly or too thin it cracks the egg
3: keep heat on medium, it takes a bit longer to fry but you will get that nicew medium brown color
4:it takes 1 pound of sausage per 6 eggs


cut eggs in half and serve
in Uk they serve with a topping called Branston pickle yum yum

Ok, seriously this is the meal someone would pick only if they were attempting to kill themselves by overeating.

Let's pick the worst things off the menu, add in soup, an egg roll, and a large soda. I hope this isn't typical of America, because that is a huge huge lunch!! A lunch that large is utterly ridiculous!!

Seriously ditch the soup, ditch the egg roll, ditch the horrid for you soda, and you would shave this meal to a more reasonable 800 calories I bet.

Better yet, pick entrees that are not deep fried, and instead filled with vegetables, and you would have a quite healthy lunch.

Surely Christine didn't mean to sucker punch this establishment so heavily by only picking the worst of the worst off of the menu.
