The Greatest Hunger

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. -Matthew 5:6

One summer I attended a junior high youth camp at my church. On one of the days they had a competition for who could eat a banana and drink a mountain dew the fastest. Normally I wouldn't have signed up for such a race but it was late in the afternoon and I was really hungry. My reasoning was, that since I felt like I was starving to death I should be able to eat faster. I couldn't have been more wrong. When the dust had cleared and the winner crowned I was the last person still trying to scarf down a banana and soda. I was embarrassingly slow.

It's hunger that Jesus is talking about in Matthew 5:6. Not an earthly hunger but a hunger and a thirsting for God. Someone with a God hunger wants to know and be like Christ. Being a good moral person isn't satisfying or fulfilling enough for them. They want God's righteousness and holiness in their lives. Just like my hunger compelled me to compete in the food slam so does our hunger for God compel us to passionately pursue his presence. David felt this way in Psalm 42:1 where he says

”As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.”

But unlike my food race, the pursuit of God is not a sprint, it's a marathon that isn't over till you die. Then our reward is to see him face to face. In the meantime it's important to remember that our hunger for God can and should always be growing. Some signs that the hunger is not growing or even dying are a decreased desire for bible reading and prayer with an increased desire for worldly things. Going to church and being around the family of God take a back seat to more self-centered interests. Remember, we all hunger for something the question is what will it be?
