An Eternal Promise

By: Pastor Todd

Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock.” Matthew 7:24-25 (NLT)

In December 2001, Italy's iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa finally reopened to the public after having been closed for nearly a dozen years. During that time, engineers completed a $25 million renovation project designed to stabilize the tower. They removed 110 tons of dirt and reduced its famous lean by 16 inches. This was necessary because the 185-foot tower had been tilting further and further toward the ground for hundreds of years. Italian authorities were concerned that if nothing was done, it would soon collapse. What was the problem? Bad design? Poor workmanship? An inferior grade of marble? No! The problem was found underneath the tower.

The sandy soil on which the city of Pisa was built wasn't stable enough to support a monument of this size. The tower wasn't built on a firm foundation.

Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, if we don't build our life on a firm foundation, we're bound to crumble at some point in the future. Without Jesus to lean on, the weight of life is simply too much to bear. Without a firm foundation, the storms of life are enough to cause anyone to lean to the point of utter ruin.

The good news is, when Jesus went to the cross, He became our secure foundation. And today, He's continuing His global renovation project, working to restore all of creation to its former glory.

The cross is the unmoving bedrock on which we can build our lives. As we grow in our relationship with Jesus and surrender every area of our hearts to Him, we discover He is the only unshakeable foundation in life.

In John 11:25, Jesus said, “…I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.” When we place our faith in Jesus, brick by brick, stone by stone, we start building an unyielding foundation in Christ. And just like those engineers who spent 12 years renovating the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Jesus promises to renovate us, too. So, let the wind blow; let the storms come. Rest assured, when you're standing on God's promises, your life won't lean.
