Want to Hear From God? Look Up!

By: Pastor David

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Ps. 19:1  (NLT)

If you've ever wondered whether God communicates with us, then stop and take a long look at the sky.  Soak in the beauty and splendor of a sunrise or sunset which is our nearest star.  Spend a few minutes trying to count the stars.  There are about 5000 visible to the naked human eye.  And, because the Earth itself gets in the way, you can only see about half of those from where you stand.  Our Milky Way galaxy has some 400 billion stars.  Astronomers estimate, around 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe. The number grows to septillion in the known universe.  Bask in the awe and wonder of creation.  [PJ1]

The first message God communicates is He is big.  Infinitely big and powerful.  If we can't even accurately measure the vastness of creation what chance do we have to comprehend the size of an “everywhere present” creator?  Stop and try to understand this for a moment and let the thought take your breath away.

On the subject of breath, the sky holds another wonder we can't even see but need to survive.  Oxygen.  This is a gas manufactured correctly on earth and nowhere else.  Through a process, we know as photosynthesis which includes sunlight and plants it is miraculously produced.  The perfect blend of so many natural ingredients come together with precision to make life possible on this earth.  If one of these factors is off just one degree of life ceases to exist.  It's a complex and perfectly balanced system.

The second message God communicates is he is supremely intelligent and wise.  Proverbs 3:19 (NLT) says “By wisdom the Lord founded the earth; by understanding, he created the heavens."

Einstein knew science and Bill Gates knows technology, but God knows everything we know or ever could know.  It all originates from Him.

When we look into the sky, we sometimes see birds.  God understands the birds and provides for them.  In (Matthew 10:29 NLT)  it says he sees when a bird falls.

The third message God communicates to us is I see you, I love you, I care for you and have provided for you.

Gods power and presence in our lives is unignorable.  His fingerprints are all over His creation.

Digging Deeper

  • 1.Take a few minutes to look into the sky and try to take in the size of it.  Share your thoughts and feelings.
  • 2.Reflect on the knowledge and wisdom of God as you see it in creation.  Share what that tells you about Him.
  • 3.Reflect on God's care for a single bird.  What are some ways you can trust God more in light of what you observed?
