Experiencing God's Love

By: Pastor Rick

“…For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” Romans 5:5 (NLT)

In today's verse, Paul assures us of God's love for us. Yet, as humans, doubting God's love is an easy pitfall to stumble into. When I start to doubt the Father's love for me, I try to remember the acronym T.R.A.N.S.F.O.R.M. This word reminds me that there are nine transforming ways we can know and experience the love of God, here they are:

TRUST: We can trust that God is for us (Romans 8:31). If God loved us while we were still enemies, how much more does He love us now that we are His friends (Romans 5:8)? We can trust Him because He's always on our side.

RING: Over 25 years ago, I gave my then girlfriend an engagement ring as a promise of my future commitment to her. God has given us the Holy Spirit as a promised expression of His love and dedication. Just as a circular ring never ends, God's love for you never ends.

ANXIETY: Anxiety is like sitting in a rocking chair, rocking. We expend a lot of energy but get nowhere. However, the Bible says perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18). If we truly believe this, then anxiety can't damage our families or thwart the purposes of God.

NATURAL: Sometimes, I feel phony in my efforts to love. Yet, when we experience the love of God, we can start loving others supernaturally!

SAVIOR: Just like a flashlight shines light into a dark corner, so the Holy Spirit wants to spotlight Jesus (John 16:14). By listening to the Holy Spirit, we can cultivate a relationship with Jesus, our Savior-a person, not a religion.

FORGIVENESS: Forgiving others can be hard, but unforgiveness leads to bitterness. When we realize God forgives us of all our sin, it motivates us to forgive others.

OVERWHELMED: Have you ever felt overwhelmed and all-consumed with love for someone? Maybe a spouse or a child? God wants you to be overwhelmed with His love for you.

RELATIONSHIP: A relationship with Jesus is everything, and His love fuels that experience.

MORE: Whatever love and joy you have experienced in the past, there is always more. More love, more grace, more forgiveness. God's well never runs dry.

Friends, the next time you feel unloved, remember that God's love has the power to T.R.A.N.S.F.O.R.M.
