LYNCHBURG, Va. (K-LOVE News – Tim Luttrell) – When you’re staring the consequences of your bad decision right in the face it can make or break you. Is was in one of those times God used a star quarterback’s mom to change his life.

Michael Vick was in the prime of his football career with the Atlanta Falcons when he was busted for his part in a dog-fighting ring.  He was sentenced to 23-months in federal prison. His mother, Brenda Vick, shared Psalm 23 with her son to help get him through life behind bars. In Psalm 23, King David wrote the much-quoted line ‘though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.’ Baptist Press reports that Vick told students at Liberty University that he prayed Psalm 23 every night in prison, and that all 544 nights he was there it sent chills through his body.

Vick became a football star early in his life, playing the game both in high school and at Virginia Tech University. Success continued for the #1 overall pick in the 2001 draft when he entered the NFL. Until this point in his life he lived by his own rules. Being behind bars forced him to reevaluate life and his walk with God. Former NFL coach Tony Dungy stepped in to help. The outspoken Christian didn’t talk with Vick about getting released from prison or returning to the NFL. The two talked about the things that had Michael Vick locked in a spiritual jail cell. He was ready for everything Dungy shared and says he was “digesting every word that came out of his mouth.”

It was his time spent with the former coach that not only had a profound impact on his life, it also opened up some NFL decision makers to the idea that Vick had changed as a person. He was eventually given a second chance and made the most of it. He was reinstated to the NFL, played 7 more seasons, and took a job as a Fox Sports football analyst after he retired. He made amends for the dog-fighting decision as well. Vick is an active member of the Humane Society of the United States as an advocate for the proper treatment of animals.
