Baylor Men's Basketball Coach Scott Drew Receives Sports Impact at 2021 K-LOVE Fan Awards

Posted on Friday, June 18, 2021 by Lindsay Williams

Tied as the Big 12’s longest-tenured head coach, in his 18th season, Scott Drew led the Baylor Bears to their first National Championship title earlier this year. Coaching runs in the family. Drew’s father is the former head coach at Valparaiso University, and his brother is a former NBA player and the current men’s basketball coach at Grand Canyon University.

Drew, his wife, Kelly, and their three children—Mackenzie, Peyton and Brody—all attended the K-LOVE Fan Awards for the first time in 2021. As this year’s Sports Impact award recipient, Drew joins a long line of faith-filled coaches and athletes who have received this honor, including Joe Gibbs, Adam Laroche and Benjamin Watson, among others.

“When you’re doing the Lord’s work, you’re just trying to please Him, and at the end of the day, trying to touch as many people as possible,” Drew shares. “It’s been a blessing being able to do what I love to do.”

More than simply coaching basketball, Drew serves as a life coach of sorts, supporting and mentoring his players, teaching them lessons that extend well beyond the court. In the locker room, Drew outlines more than strategic plays; he tries to impart character and values to all of his MVPs.

“We have a culture of JOY [Jesus, others and yourself], and then we have our pillars—the four pillars that we stand for. Everything’s biblically-based, everything’s Christ-centered. At the end of the day, winning games is great, but players being baptized, lives being saved… The best compliment a coach can get is when they leave and then they ask you for advice or come back and tell you what an impact you had on their family or them,” Drew attests. “We’ve had so many great success stories, and God’s given us such a great opportunity and platform.”

Ticket packages for the 2022 K-LOVE Fan Awards Weekend are now on sale. Next year’s event will take place May 27-29, 2022 in Nashville.
