No Fear In Love

It's a cliche, but it's true.  "It's better to have loved and lost, than to have ever loved at all."

Matt Hammit wrote a song about that,  All of Me.  It's about not being afraid to love his unborn son, because of the threat that they might loose him after finding out he would be born with a heart defect.

Maybe you think that’s crazy – how could someone be afraid of loving?  Or maybe you totally get it.  If you’ve been hurt, you don’t want to be hurt again. So sometimes you hold back your love.

That song is a challenge to not hold back your love out of fear of loving and losing.

The lyrics say:
I won’t let sadness steal you from my arms
I won’t let pain keep you from my heart
I’ll trade the fear of all that I could lose
For every moment I share with you.

We are called to love like God loves.  He didn’t hold back his love for you because of fear you may reject Him.  He went so far as to sacrifice his own son as the ultimate act of love.

"God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us."  -1 John 4:9-12

Maybe you could give that kind of unconditional love to someone else.  There's lots of opportunities coming up next week with Valentine's Day.  Whether it’s your spouse, someone who has potential to be a spouse, a friend, or even a stranger.  We’re called to love others like God loves us, with no fear.

Matt Hammit wrote these lyrics about how he wanted to love his medically fragile child, without fear:

You're worth all of me, you're worth all of me
So let me recklessly love you, even if I bleed
You're worth all of me, you're worth all of me

"Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear." -1 John 4:18

Arise!

Life may not be exactly the way you want, but it's the way it is. So we have to make the best out of it.

Full disclosure:  I haven't exactly figured out how to do this yet, but I'm trying every single day.

I failed at it last night while sitting at the ballpark watching my son who is 4 learn how to run the bases in the right order, and how to throw a ball.  It was bittersweet.

I admit, jealousy rose up inside of me from all the boys that had a Dad there to help.  My son doesn't have that. I am  shaking off feelings of depression about being in a situation that I never expected to be in.

But, this morning, I opened my bible to this verse and it reminded me to keep going. It reminded me to make the best out of baseball season, and this season in my life.

Arise, shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. - Isaiah 60:1

Arise from the depression and prostration in which circumstances have kept you - rise to a new life! Shine, be radiant with the glory of the Lord, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you
