Family Motto

"If you don't know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else." -Laurence J. Peter

Took a quick trip over the weekend to meet with some of you awesome K-LOVE listeners in San Antonio and fill up on some yummy Tex Mex food.

On the plane, I sat next to a father of four grown children, so I picked his brain on how he did it. I need all the help I can get.

He said they wanted to raise kids to love and serve God, so they came up with a 5 pillar family motto:

Be Clean

Be Happy

Be Positive

Take Care of each other

Ask what you can do to help and than do it.

They ran every decision they made, and every behavior through those 5 pillars.  The kids are all grown now, and they still talk about those 5 pillars.

I love to have a plan and I am an obsessive list maker.  I naturally love the idea of having a plan for your family to grow and be successful.  Why not have plans for your family?  You may have a plan for your career, a budget and savings for college.  I don't want to guess at how to get to the destination of raising children to love and serve God, so I want to have a plan on how to get there.

We are raising future adults, after all.

Tell me what's your family mission or motto?

Inspired by Dr. James Dobson, our family motto is "Be There!". We say that to each other frequently. Live your life in such a way that you will "Be There!" [in Heaven]. I want to you to "Be There" in eternity with me...This is the only thing of real significance in your life...above every other purpose and goal, the only thing that really matters is that you determine now to "Be There!"

We have one "main" family motto but a total of three.  The main family motto is "Coram Deo". To live coram Deo is to live one’s entire life in the presence of God, under the authority of God, to the glory of God.  Our other mottos are "Strong to Serve" and one we made up "Semper Gumby" (loosely translated always flexible!)

So, I grew up in a large family and it wasn't until I was an adult that I was really inspired, I had a fried who was teaching her children to be a Blessing.
She would gently remind them to be a blessing in what they were doing.
When her children were naughty I saw her and her husband take the kids and sit them down and have a conversation with them and the first thing she would ask it, "Was that choice a blessing to the Lord, whoever else involed, and did you make a choice that glorfies the Lord." that right there made the biggest impact in my life, I am not a mom but I am learnign good was to be one. I do babysit alot and I have taken that into my babysitting and it has made babysitting so much more fun!!! So I guess what I am saying is, I hope to teach the children I am around that putting others first and being a blessing to glorfy God is the best way to live. Praying for you on your journey in life.
