Enjoy Some Watermelon Today

The big fruit gets it's own day today - National Watermelon Day!  So enjoy some refreshing watermelon today and wrap it up with a seed spitting contest.  Or celebrate by watching a little kid in a watermelon.  Enjoy!

My watermelon story has nothing to do with seed spitting or even kids (though I do have some good ones there). Last year my sister in law, my husband and I would go visit theur mother who was in the nursing home. We'd go after church, bringing lunch and a good dessert. When watermelon was in season that's what we'd bring. One Sunday we were eating the watermelon, when an elderly resident  saw us on the patio. He wanted watermelon so badly he was running his wheelchair into the door trying to get out. We asked someone if it was ok if he came out and had watermelon with us. He joined us and we had a nice visit with a nice gentleman who just wanted watermelon.

On the drive to work today, someone was saying they didnt know if anyone else recognized today as National Watermelon Day... I follow a blog called CakeWrecks (www.cakewrecks.com) and they also dedicated their blog today to National Watermelon Day. Just thought you'd like to know you're not the only ones out there celebrating!

Watermelon is a long-standing joke in my church choir. If you forget, don't know, or blank out on song lyrics, smile, lift your hand and form the word "watermelon, watermelon" instead of the real words. Everyone will think you are praising or in worship! In choir practice, we have certain songs with phrases that suddenly become a mass of watermelons and laughter! Seriously, when it comes to leading the congregation to the Throne Room, the Holy Ghost brings supernatural recall, not watermelons.
