Immerse Yourself in a Community That Wants to See You Grow

Church isn't a beautiful building with pipe organs and old paintings. It's the place we grow together, share our burdens, and strengthen our spiritual practice. This year, on Sept. 15, churches across the country will celebrate Back to Church Sunday, a holiday reminding us of the important role that community plays in the maturation of our faith.

Whether you already have a steady church home, or you've been pulled away from Sunday service for a while, or you're still looking for a community of believers, K-LOVE is here to provide some helpful resources.

There are lots of ways to participate in Back to Church Sunday. To help us provide the right resources, tell us where you are in your relationship with church.

Building a Spiritual Practice

Many things can get in the way of building and maintaining relationships at church, but Scripture tells us the importance of gathering to worship and study the Word. Maybe you have been away from regular church attendance; maybe you got hurt and walked away; maybe you started prioritizing other things, or maybe life just got too busy. But there’s no other place that allows us to build relationships based on our shared identity as children of God. Here are ways to develop consistency in your spiritual life:

  • Define Your Personal Values: A sense of adventure and spontaneity isn't a bad thing, but a mature relationship with Jesus takes consistency and dedication over time. When potential alternative plans come up, remember that your relationship with God is the bedrock that all your other relationships are built on.
  • Make Intentional Connections: Church isn't just a place that you go to hear a sermon. Church is a body of believers, and that means that you won't see the fruit of attending church until you immerse yourself in its community. Sometimes that can be as simple as spending time with other attendees doing fun extracurricular activities outside of church. You could start by inviting someone for coffee.
  • Join a Small Group: Joining a Bible study or a small group that meets regularly ensures that you aren't just a passive listener, but rather a participant in the church. This is your place to dive deeper into the Word and to apply Sunday's sermon to areas of your own life.
  • Keep a Prayer Journal: You'll be amazed at how often the exact thing that you're praying about comes up in a church service. It's God's way of reminding us that he knows us deeper than we know ourselves, and that He has a plan for us even we ourselves can't see it.

Invite a Friend to Church!

Sometimes a simple invitation is all it takes to put somebody on the path towards a closer relationship with Jesus. Invite a friend to church! While only 5% of American have received a personal invitation to church, 80% of Americans would be open to attending church if invited by a friend. Here are some things you can do to make a visitor feel less intimidated.

  • Offer to Carpool: Arriving together means that your guest won't have to walk into a new environment on their own.
  • Make Introductions: The more personal connections someone can make with other churchgoers, the more likely they are to feel welcomed and return. There's going to come a time when you're busy or out of town, and if you've made a few friendly introductions, your guest will have other people they feel at home with!
  • Make Lunch Plans: Not only does everybody love food, but sharing a meal will give your guest a chance to ask questions and unpack everything that they experienced during the service.
