Do you ever lose something that's really important to you and you start frantically looking to find it? For me, it's tools. If I go out into my shop and I can't find a tool, it drives me nuts and I'm frantically looking and I can't stop looking until I find it.
There's good news here about God. He never hides. God never hides from us. Christian, you will never be without God. God can always be found.
I used to play hide and seek with my kids. As you know, kids are pretty terrible at hide and seek. They're not good at hiding. I remember one time, one particular son, he thought he was hiding. I found him in the middle of our living room, and he's laying down, and he has a bucket over his head. That is God. He's easy to find, and we don't have to search. We don't have to struggle. He's easy for us to find.
God's Promise
Here's the context. The context of Jeremiah chapter 29 is that Jeremiah the prophet, he is writing to God's people. God's people are not in a good situation. They're in captivity in Babylon. They've been led into exile. Jeremiah writes this little portion of his letter to encourage them that God was still going to fulfill His promises to them.
Let me read you some of the context in verses ten through 14:
"For thus says the Lord, when 70 years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare, not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. And then you will call upon me, and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me. When you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you, declares the Lord." - Jeremiah 29:10-14
Now, we know from the New Testament that the same thing is true for us. Matthew chapter 7 and verse 7 says:
"Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and it will be opened to you." - Matthew 7:7
What Do You Need to Find God?
Think about this with me. According to this scripture in Jeremiah chapter 29 and Matthew chapter 7, what do you need to do to find God? Do you need to be a good person? Do you need to make sure that all your sin is confessed and dealt with? No.
What do you need to do, Christian? You need to look for Him today. Don't believe the lie that you need to clean up your act before you'll find God. Don't believe the lie that you won't find Him when you seek. God is there.
Start right where you are. Pray. Open your Bible and take that first step. Even today, God promises you will find Him.
