Have you ever heard the phrase, "you don't know what you don't know"? Well, it's really true. We don't know what we don't know. The problem is, do we ever ask for advice? Do we ever ask for directions? Now, in my car, of course, I have a GPS system. She will tell me where to go and where to turn. Sometimes I'm not very good at listening to her. Sometimes I don't want to ask for advice. Sometimes I don't even really want to read the instructions.
I remember the other day that I was putting together a Lego car for my grandson. The problem was the Lego car had 800 pieces. 800! I had to look at the instructions. I tried putting it together on my own, and I found that as I was putting it together, if I missed a step, it really messed everything up later on. I had to undo it, take it apart, go by the directions, follow the instructions page by page.
God's Instruction Book
The Bible says in our Verse of the Day today, Proverbs chapter 15 and verse 22: "Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisors bring success." It is okay to ask for advice. As a matter of fact, in the book of James it says ask for wisdom. It's okay to ask for directions. It's okay to ask for advice. As a matter of fact, if we ask for advice, plans can go much better. We're never meant to figure things out all on our own.
No one knows everything. Matter of fact, no one knows everything about God. No one person knows everything on how to live life. That's why we have the Word of God that we can get advice from. Asking for advice is wisdom. Solomon, considered to be one of the wisest men that ever lived, asked God for wisdom. He asked God for a discerning heart.
Wisdom in Community
The book of James is reminding us we can ask for wisdom. Solomon asked for wisdom. It's okay to ask for advice. If we surround ourselves with people who study the Word of God, who have a relationship with the Lord, we can talk about how to live life together. We can give advice back and forth. We can read God's instruction book. It's called the Bible.
I've heard the Bible said this way: It is Basic Information Before Leaving Earth. We can follow His instruction in the Bible. We can talk with others, get advice from others, and as we follow those instructions, our plans will move along much better in our life.
Are you carrying out plans that you have only figured out yourself, or are you seeking wise counsel from the Word of God and other believers?
