One of the most common questions that I get as a pastor is pastor, how do I really know that I'm saved? Can I have assurance of my salvation? Can I be sure that I'm going to heaven? Honestly, I've asked myself that question, and I've had seasons in my life where I question my salvation. I think that's a good question.
A lot of people ask that question. Paul in Romans chapter 8 and verse 1 gives us a very comforting answer. He says in Romans chapter 8 and verse 1, “so now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” How can we really know that we're saved? It's if you and I are in Christ Jesus. That raises the question, what does it mean to be in Christ Jesus?
What It Means to Be in Christ
It begins by us acknowledging that we can't save ourselves. Right? You and I are spiritually bankrupt, and without Jesus, there is no saving. When you and I repent of our sins, when we turn from sin and turn to Christ, we are now in Christ. We're in the family of God.
What's interesting is the word condemnation means punishment. It is a sentencing. It's this guilt that a person experiences. Here's what happened. When Jesus went to the cross, He took our punishment. When Jesus went to the cross, He absorbed the wrath of God that you and I deserved. When we say that we're in Christ and that we're saved, what are we saved from? We're saved from the wrath of God because Jesus absorbed the wrath of God.
The Freedom Paul Found
The good news of the gospel is that when we receive this free gift of salvation, you and I are now in Jesus Christ. What's interesting about Romans chapter 8 is Apostle Paul wrote this, and if you know anything about Apostle Paul and his past, he was a Pharisee and a Pharisee was all about keeping the law.
A Pharisee was very legalistic. They did everything to project strength as if they had everything figured out. Right. It was very tiresome. It wore Paul out. When we get to Romans chapter 8 and verse 1, it's almost like this burden has been lifted. He says, now there is no condemnation. There's no more striving to earn our salvation.
Why? Because you and I are in Christ Jesus. That's really the good news of the gospel, is that we don't have to strive to be saved because Jesus absorbed the wrath of God that you and I deserved. The question for all of us is, are we in Christ Jesus?
