How do you react to the moments that you mess up in life? It's probably not something we love to think about. It's not something I love to think about. When I mess up, I'm honestly really hard on myself. I struggle with perfectionism, and I try to live with pretty high standards in my life. When those don't go according to my plan, I can be pretty hard on myself.
When it comes to my spiritual life, honestly, it gets even worse. When I know that God has called me to live a certain way and I break that by sinning, I just come down on myself with so much anger and so much fury. Then I project that onto God and I think, man, I can't believe I've done this again. God must be so mad at me. Then I'll even go so far as to feel like now I have to make up for it, that if I can just do a bunch of good things, maybe I'll be back in God's favor.
Breaking Free from the Wrong Mindset
If you've ever struggled with those feelings, I would love to share a verse with you that I hope breaks you from that mindset and frees you up to live life the way that God wants you to live life. The verse comes from Romans chapter 8 verse 2. The apostle Paul says, And because you belong to Him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
We belong to God, and because we belong to God, that means we are beloved by God. Because we're beloved by God, it means that we are no longer slaves to sin and to death, because God has drawn us in with His love. It was that love that sent Jesus to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins, so that He could die the death that we deserved, and so that we could receive the life that we never deserved.
What It Means to Belong to God
This is what it means to belong to God. It means that our masters are no longer us being pulled into temptation and to life apart from God. It means that our master is now a Father who looks down upon us with grace and with mercy. He's not asking you to do better or make up for all the wrongs that you've done in life. What He's asking you to do is simply come to Him daily to bring your brokenness, to be honest before Him so that He can forgive you of your sins, so that He could lavish you with grace and mercy so that His Spirit could work in your heart to grow you more and more into the image of Jesus. That's who the Father is in our lives.
A Father's Heart
I think about it with my own kids. I want my kids to know that I am a safe place, somewhere that they can just be themselves, somewhere that they can learn. It's okay to fail, and we want to get back up. We want to set our eyes on doing better tomorrow and better tomorrow, and better the day after that, because we have a forgiving God on our side. Imagine if they came to me on the times that they messed up, and I just got so angry with them, and I started screaming and I started yelling, would they want to come back to me the next time they messed up?
I would be very surprised if they did. They would probably hide from me. I think some of us have that picture of God. We think that He's angry at us and so we hide from Him, but God entered into our mess so that we could live life with Him. That's why in the garden, when Adam and Eve sinned, they hid from God. God specifically called them out. Adam, where are you? What's going on? This was a call to repentance. My son, my daughter. Share everything that's gone wrong so that I can make it right.
We have the life-giving spirit in our life because we belong to God and we are beloved by God. Let's live free from sin and death and live fully in the power of God.
