We talk a lot about giving credit where credit is due. Whether you're talking about an artist or an athlete or an entrepreneur, or maybe an inventor, we want to give credit to the person that deserves credit for the work that they've done.
Who gets the ultimate credit for all beauty, for all goodness, for all the glory in the universe? The psalmist here tells us exactly who, and it is the Lord. The Lord is the one who gets all the credit for all the glory. Honor the Lord for the glory of His name.
The Power of God's Name
A name represents everything that a person is. A name represents a person's entire being, their entire reputation. When you hear their name, you think about everything it is that you know about them. When the Bible talks about God's name, that is just shorthand for all of God's perfections. If you could possibly get that in your mind—that's what we think of all that God is, all of His beauty, glory, goodness, all His perfections are represented in His name.
Another translation of this verse reads: Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness. “Ascribe” is a good word, because to ascribe is to give something or someone credit for something they are, or something they have done. That helps make a lot of sense of this verse.
The World Misses the Mark
Everything good and everything beautiful, God alone should get the credit for. There's a lot of good in the world. There is a lot of beauty in the world. There is a lot of glory in the world. There's a lot of majesty. Most of the world sees it and does not give God the credit, does not give God the glory.
They're in the mountains and they say, "Isn't Mother Nature amazing?" Or they watch athletes in a game doing amazing things. The athlete points to the name on the back of his jersey, and gives no credit to God for how He's designed them. Somebody overcomes and triumphs over some obstacle in their life, and what do people do? They talk about how amazing is the human spirit? What is all of that? All of that is not giving God the credit.
Praise Him for All He Has Done
Christians, like you and me, are different. We ascribe to the Lord the glory that is due His name. Make it a point this week to actively spot God's glory around you. When you do, ascribe to Him the credit, to give Him the praise for all that He has done.
Consciously as you go throughout your week, spot the glory of God and give Him the praise for it. Give Him what He deserves. Honor the Lord for the glory of His name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.
