“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.” 1 Timothy 2:1 (NLT)
Prayer remains one of the greatest opportunities we have to change the world without ever leaving home. The idea that an all-knowing, all-powerful and ever-present God would choose to run His world in response to our prayers is mind-boggling. God hears and answers the prayers of His own people, and that is an incredible benefit of prayer.
We are called to pray consistently for people we know. In addition, it’s also important to pray for people we don’t know, realizing that we pray to a God who knows the needs, dreams and fears of every single person on planet Earth. Here are a few prompts to guide you as you pray for the world—the lost, the hurting and the hopeless:
- Pray that God will exalt His name in the world. (Matthew 6:9)
- Pray that God will extend His kingdom on the earth. (Matthew 6:10)
- Pray that God will use His people to share the Gospel with others in order “to know Christ and to make him known.” (2 Thessalonians 3:1)
- Pray for the outpouring of the Spirit on the earth. (Joel 2:23, Ephesians 3:19)
- Pray that the Church will respond with compassion and wisdom to the world’s social struggles on the earth.
- Pray for the conversion and salvation of the lost, especially in third world countries. (Romans 10:1)
- Pray for the advancement of the Gospel everywhere. (Matthew 24:14)
- Pray that the Church will be empowered and equipped for ministry to the nations. (Acts 4:29-30)
- Pray for the leaders of the world. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
- Pray for the unity of all believers and the Church. (John 17:21-23)
