Doing Good, Well.

“And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” – Hebrews 13:16 (NLT)

What comes to mind when you read the words ‘do good’ and ‘share with those in need’? If you are like me, you immediately begin to take inventory of the things you have in abundance. Those things you would not miss if given away. Maybe you think about rounding up all those clothes in your closet that no longer fit or that you haven’t worn in several seasons.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that these sacrifices (doing good and sharing) are what please God.

As I've meditated on this passage a profound, yet simple thought has lingered with me: What might it look like for me to give sacrificially?  When was the last time it cost me something when I gave?

Very early on in my walk with the Lord, I realized that there were more ways to do good than just giving my old clothes or those extra items around the house to Goodwill.

Consider your time. Have you thought about taking an evening and visiting some of the men and women who, for whatever reason, can no longer attend church? What about giving up a Saturday morning to serve at a local mission?

Consider your talents. There are a variety of skills, gifts, and abilities you can offer to others. What are you naturally good at? What is it you enjoy doing? Go do that for the glory of God.

Consider your treasures. What if we bought a coffee or food for someone in line behind us? What if we gave up an evening of eating out, and instead brought dinner to a family who needed it?

One of my favorite quotes is from the missionary Jim Elliot. He wrote, “Give up what you can’t keep to gain what you can't lose." God has uniquely gifted you and me with the time, talents, and treasures (material possessions) we each need to accomplish all that God has for us.

As we submit everything to Him, people will see the difference that Jesus can bring to an individual, a family, and to society. We have an incredible opportunity to show the difference that Jesus can and does make when we bring all that we have and are under the leadership and direction of Jesus Christ.

Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus…” (Colossians 3:17)

DIGGING DEEPER:

  1. When was the last time you donated your time, talent, or treasure sacrificially?
  2. Has this message sparked any new insights for you?
