It's Not What You Know, It's Who You Know

Have you ever heard the statement? It's not what you know. It's who you know. I don't know about you, but sometimes that can be very frustrating because you can work hard to learn things but it comes down to it's just who you know. That can be very frustrating, but we actually find our Verse of the Day has some of those elements in it.

Our verse is found in Hebrews chapter 4, starting in verse 16. It says, So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

He Cares for You Deeply

Imagine if we were working in a job and we found out that the owner wanted to see us in his office. Can you imagine the anxiety, the stress, trying to recall what mistakes you may have made? We all make mistakes so we can dwell on- I did this, I made this mistake, and what's going to happen? We start stressing about what this meeting could be about.

Imagine over time you developed a relationship with the owner's son, and you've gotten to be very close. What you do know is he's going to be in this meeting. You know, because you've constantly felt that from him as your relationship has grown, that he's always had your back. He's always there to defend you, to guide you, to direct you. You know without a doubt that he cares about you deeply. That's the beauty of the context of this verse.

Our High Priest Who Understands

In the whole passage, starting in verse 13, it talks about God developing all creation. He causes everything to be held accountable. It goes on in verses 14 through 16 and starts talking about how we have a High Priest who knows what we've gone through, who's experienced it with us, who as our Savior came to this earth to experience what we experience.

He is there with you, and His presence is there when we stand before God and we come before Him. That's why sometimes we, as Christians, get lost in the do's and don'ts, and we think it's all about what we know. It's really important to understand, even in this context of our Christian walk, it's not necessarily as important about what you know, but it's who you know.

Focusing on Relationship

The reason why that being the focal point is so important, is because as we focus on who you know, we start looking into God's Word. It's no longer about the do's and don'ts and the stuff in it. It's about the story of Jesus all throughout Scripture. If we focus on who you know, then we know as we walk through this life, we may make mistakes, but we are focused on the relationship we have with Christ.

Some people will see this verse and "come boldly before the throne of God" and think, oh yeah, I got it because I'm doing all these great things. That's where we get lost, because actually we only have that ability to become bold in the presence of God, because of who we know, because we know that as we become present in the throne room of God, Jesus our friend, our Savior, our Lord is there with us.
