Worship While You Wait

So I'll never forget waking up on a Tuesday and I lost sensation in my legs. I was playing basketball on Monday, woke up on a Tuesday and then just couldn't move my legs. And my sister took me to the hospital. And here I found myself in a waiting room. They did a bunch of tests, and on the eighth day, on the eighth day, they diagnosed me with MS.

And I'll never forget waiting in this room, waiting for my results while the doctors met with the team, with the physicians, with the whole team, and I'm just sitting there anxious and I'm like, "What's next?" I had so many thoughts racing through my mind like, "Well, will I be able to walk again? Do I have cancer?"

And in our text today, we learn what it means to wait on God. Lamentations chapter 3 and verse 25, the writer says, "The Lord is good to those who depend on him," or another version says, "wait on him, to those who search for him." What does it mean to wait on God? You know, waiting seems passive, but I think for the believer, we have to understand when we wait, we're actually expecting the Lord to do something.

Kind of like when I did track in high school. I'm waiting for my buddy to give me that baton to just keep running, right. I don't just wait aimlessly. No, I am focused, and that's an important word, because when we wait, our focus has to be on the Lord. Our focus has to be on His word.

And we have to be very careful in our time of waiting who we allow to speak into our lives. Because I'll never forget when I was in the hospital, I had people telling me, "Well, wow, maybe you're there because you did something wrong and God's mad at you," right? And I had to learn to drown out the negative voices.

And I had to tune in to hear what God was speaking to me. See, we don't just passively wait on God. We worship while we wait. We recall and remember how faithful God has been to us. And just like I was in that waiting room, I didn't know what the doctors were doing behind the scenes.

I had no idea. I'm like, "Why are they taking so long? I'm like, hurry up, give me my results." But sometimes God does that to us. He's quiet. He's working behind the scenes. We have no idea what He's doing, but He's ultimately formulating a plan. Just like those physicians and the doctors were formulating a plan for me.

God's always working out a plan. And it's for my good and for His glory. I just got to ask myself, "What am I doing in the waiting?" And I want to encourage you, if you're in a season of waiting, worship while you're waiting because something happens. When we shift our focus off of ourselves and we focus on the Lord, take the attention off of yourself and focus on the Lord.

Focus on His goodness. Recall His faithfulness, and be careful who you allow to speak into your life. Let God's voice be the loudest voice in your life.
