8 Prayers for a Broken Heart or Grief

Heartbreak can happen in many ways, betrayal, deceit, rejection, attack, or loss of someone you love. In these times, God’s Word reminds us that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Here are some prayers to help you as you lean into the Lord and trust Him on your journey of healing.

1. No, the Lord’s delight is in those who fear Him, those who put their hope in His unfailing love. – Psalm 147:11 NLT

Lord, You are Immanuel, God with me. Thank You for being with me as I mourn this loss. You are the God of all comfort. Lord, I need Your comfort at this very moment. My heart is broken, but I am reminded You are near. I trust that You will rescue me from this dark cloud of despair because Your Word declares that You delight in me. Amen.

2. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. – Psalm 147:3 NLT

Jesus, please heal my broken heart. Please fill me with the peace that goes beyond understanding, with joy that only can come from You. Walk closely with me on my journey to healing and recovery. I believe my healing is possible through Your power alone. Amen.

3. “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.” – John 14:27 NLT

Heavenly Father, I am crying out to You. Please heal me from the pain of the past that consumes my thoughts. Father, it hurts so much. Dry my tears and restore my heart. Fill me with Your joy amid this overwhelming sorrow. May I experience Your peace that only You can give. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. The Lord hears His people when they call to Him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed. – Psalm 34:17-18 NLT

Lord, I bring You my heavy heart with all its burdens and cares. You know my situation. You know I can’t make it without You. Comfort my heart, give me strength, and help me face this day. Amen.

5. My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! 3 He will not let you stumble; the One who watches over you will not slumber. – Psalm 121:2-3 NLT

God, I am so broken. I feel I am so thankful for the reminder that You are my strength and my shield in all this pain. Thank You that You already know the outcome of this misery I am facing. Grant me Your peace during this storm. You promise me that my feet will not slip. Please help me! Strengthen me for today. Amen.

6. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. – Ephesians 4:32 NLT

God, You ask us to forgive as You forgive. It is so hard to do this, to find compassion and love when my heart is hurting. Please help me to surrender my desires. Help me see them through Your eyes. Give me Your love for them. Empower me, by Your mercy and grace, to let go of the pain. Help me to walk in Your peace and joy, knowing You will lead them on their journey of healing, as You will for me. Amen.

7. The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon Me, for the Lord has anointed Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. – Isaiah 61:1 NLT

Heavenly Father, You are not a God who punishes or orchestrates hurt. You are more than able to deliver. Please release me from the darkness of this broken heart. I ask You to intervene as I am feeling helpless. Thank You for reminding us why You came to us to bind up the brokenhearted and set the captive free. Thank You that pain is as temporary as a season. You will work it out for my good and Your glory. Amen.

8. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and make me willing to obey You. – Psalm 51:12 NLT

Lord, I’ve been struggling to forgive and let this go, but I know You can help me. Give me the willingness to forgive the way You forgive. Change my heart, Lord, and help me care more about obeying You than I do about holding onto anything done to me. Amen.
