Psalm chapter 90 and verse 2 says, "Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, You are God." Behind every crisis, every difficult situation, or the fear of the unknown is the eternal truth that God has always been, and God will always be. Moses wrote this psalm. Did you know Moses wrote psalms?
He wrote this. It's a lament, which means it's an expression of sorrow. As best we can tell from the context, there was some sort of natural disaster that had happened. And Moses is understandably lamenting something terrible that had happened. And what does Moses do? He remembers God's eternality, that is, God has no beginning and God has no end.
The Contrast Between God and Man
Unlike you and me, unlike man, which he points out in verse 10, "The years of our life are 70, or even by reason of strength 80. Yet their span is but toil and trouble. They are soon gone, and we fly away." But God has always been. And God always will be. Think about this. Why is that important to remember under a disaster?
Nothing catches God by surprise. God is always in complete and total control. Nothing is outside of His control. I remember about a year ago, a tornado came through our community and caused a lot of destruction. I was home with my family and it touched down only a few miles from our house.
After the tornado came through, I threw some of the kids in the car. We said, let's go out. Let's see if we can find a family or people that need some help. We threw a chainsaw in the back of the car and we went looking.
Tears of Joy in the Midst of Disaster
The first house we came on was a two story home that had been reduced to rubble. This family had made it to the basement, and they were out and they were standing around outside the house. They all had tears streaming down their faces. They had just lost everything that they had in the world. As we got closer, I discovered that their tears were tears of joy. They were overjoyed.
How could they be overjoyed under that kind of a disaster? Well, I learned that they were believers like you and me. They knew God and knew that this had not taken Him by surprise. They knew that God was in control and that He was going to use this for their good. They knew that God was going to take care of them, and that He loved them.
Remembering God's Greatness in Hard Times
Have you ever faced something, maybe not a disaster, but have you ever faced something so hard that it was really hard to think about anything else? What do you need in those times? What do you need to remember about God? Moses would say, “from beginning to end, from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” In other words, God, whatever this is that's going on, You are not under all this. God, You are above this.
Today, spend time, meditating on God's eternal nature. Go outside. Look at something big. Mountains. The ocean. The sky. Remind yourself that whatever it is you're going through, God is far greater. God is unchanging. God is eternal.
