Do you love correction? One of the things that I really struggle with is receiving correction from people. In fact, most of the times I tend to get more defensive. Honestly, it's one of my biggest struggles because I feel a little foolish when people correct me. Today's Verse of the Day really convicted me.
What Does It Mean to Humble Ourselves?
I think it takes a lot of humility to be corrected. When I read this verse, I asked myself, what does it mean to humble myself before God? I think one of the things this means is surrendering to the leadership of King Jesus. It's when you and I say, Lord, Your way is better than my way.
We can say that and secretly just kind of do our thing and make decisions without ever consulting with God. We never include God in our decision making process. Listen, when we humble ourselves before God, we're saying, God, I can't do this without You. I am depending on You. I'm trusting that Your way is better.
When I read something in the Bible and I see a command, I'm going to trust that that command is actually for my good. Even if I don't understand it, but the Bible is calling me to obey that command, I'm trusting that God's way is better.
The Heart of Humility: Serving Others
Humility is so much about serving others. I think of Jesus. Mark chapter 10 and verse 45 says, "For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." Jesus is our greatest example. He washed His disciples' feet. He served. He elevated people.
One of the things I'm currently learning is to celebrate people's victories. If I see that something is going well for my buddy, my wife, my son, or my family, I celebrate that. I think it takes an act of humility to do that.
The Joy of The Lord is Our Strength
James says, humble yourselves before God. Then he says, resist the devil, and he will flee from you. In order for me to resist, I need strength. The Bible tells us that the joy of the Lord is my strength. If the joy of the Lord is my strength, where do I get this joy from? Psalm chapter 16 and verse 11 says that in His presence there's fullness of joy.
If we're going to talk about resisting the devil because we know the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion, and James is saying, you need to learn to resist the devil. How do we do that? By abiding in Jesus. Our strength will come from the Lord's presence.
I don't know what 2026, 2027 is going to hold for us, but here's what I do know. Our strength is ultimately going to come from the Lord's presence. Humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
