No More Stumbling in the Dark

Read the transcript from today's video devotional.

We're told by Jesus that He is the light of the world. Think about what that means. He's not saying that He casts light onto the world. It's not that Jesus just offers a brighter path. He's actually claiming to be the light of the world. In other words, Jesus is the very source of light.

That means that Jesus is the source of truth. To be enlightened is to know truth. Jesus is the very source of truth. He's the very source of understanding. He's the very source of moral clarity. We're told here that following Him then means that we no longer walk in darkness because we can see—we have light.

John Owen wrote, "The mind is naturally dark concerning God and spiritual things. All our light and knowledge must come from above."

From Darkness to Light

Think about it. There was a day when you didn't have light. There was a day when you were stumbling along in the darkness. You didn't know the truth and you didn't really understand who you were. You didn't understand the world that you live in. You certainly did not understand God. The Bible describes that as being someone who was walking in darkness.

Now you have the light and you understand who you are. Now you understand the world that you live in, and now you understand who God is.

The Headlamp Illustration

My kids and I enjoy backpacking and we love being up in the mountains, hiking miles and miles into the mountains to where you're totally away from people, totally away from society. If you're in the wilderness in the middle of the night and it is a moonless night, it is as dark as can be.

You don't just go hiking off through the woods in the dark like that because it's dangerous. You can't see what's around you. That's why you bring a headlamp. If you've got a headlamp, then you can see where you're going. You can see the scenery around you. You can keep track of the path that you are on.

To be in Christ is to have that headlamp in your life by which you can see. A Christian alone can see. You can see beauty. You can see the right path. You can see obstacles that are in front of you.

Walking in His Light

Today, would you remind yourself that you no longer walk in darkness? The path before you and the world around you—it has been illuminated by Christ. This verse is true. John 8:12: Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you won't have to walk in darkness because you will have the light that leads to life."
