Our Place of Safety

Here are three images that we should picture, alongside the psalmist, when we think of the Lord. You've heard this before. The Lord is my rock. The Lord is not just my rock, He's my fortress. Not just my fortress, He is my Savior. These are three images that we want to have in mind.

I really like the way the ESV puts it. It says, The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Let's think about these one at a time.

The Lord Is My Rock

Picture with me first, the Lord is my rock. Think of rock as something solid—a solid foundation beneath us. Charles Spurgeon said that and more. Listen to this quote:

Our God is a rock. He is a rock for foundation, a rock for habitation, a rock for defense, a rock for supply. Oh, blessed is the man who has made this rock his all in all. When you stand on this rock, the waves of trouble may roar at your feet, but they cannot move you. When you hide in this rock, the fiery darts of the wicked may be quenched upon it. The Lord is my rock. Make Him so by your simple faith.

We put our faith in the Lord. We trust Him. He's our rock.

The Lord Is My Fortress

Not just our rock, the Lord is also our fortress. Here's what you should picture when you think of a fortress. We're not familiar with fortresses, but a fortress in this day would mean a place of defense. 360-degree defense and protection. Not just hiding behind a wall, but walls. You're in the center, and there are these high walls surrounding you with watchtowers, full of soldiers. You've got all the supplies you need.

That's what it is to be in a fortress. It says that the Lord is our fortress. Not only is our firm foundation the Lord, but also He is our protection, our place of refuge.

The Lord Is My Savior

Finally, the Lord is our Savior. The Lord saves us. He snatches us from danger, He rescues us, He delivers us, and He puts us in the fortress and on the rock. He's our salvation, our protection, and our foundation. He is everything.

The Lord is Jesus. It's why we call Him, as Christians, the Lord Jesus Christ. He's the one who came to earth, the Son of God, and He lived a perfect life. He didn't deserve it, but He suffered and died and then rose from the dead. All that was in the place of sinners like you and me, so that sinners like you and me could be forgiven of our sin and reconciled to God, so that we could be rescued, delivered, and put in the fortress that is the Lord and on the rock that is the Lord.

The verse is true. Psalm chapter 18 verse 2—The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my Savior. My God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
