Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things. - 2 Timothy 2:7 (NLT)
I experienced one of my most pride-crushing experiences in college. I was preparing to present for my seminary preaching class. I was anxious. I was mulling over what I should say. My dominating thought was, "What will others say about me?" After politely listening to me stress out, my wife lovingly said, "Remember Galatians 1:10. Are you trying to seek the approval of men or of God? Seek to please God, Rick."
That happened over 20 years ago. I still think about it. My wife’s words that day highlighted my need for regular reflection and why it is essential. After reflecting on her words, I found 3 priceless jewels of wisdom that emerged from self-reflection:
1. I reflected on how I needed to please God, not man (Galatians 1:10). I was in seminary because I wanted to be trained to love God and love people. But I was more concerned about pleasing the other students in my class and the professor than God. As I reflected on my faulty thoughts, I saw how my reactions were more about myself than God.
2. I reflected on my lack of humility. My musings about what I was going to say spoke more to my preoccupation with my glory than the Lord’s. My reflection brought me tearful remorse, which stopped my selfish actions.
3. I reflected on the grace of Jesus and His love for me. As I swam in the soup of my own ego, I told the Lord I was sorry. I knew I was being selfish. I needed to be reminded His grace was greater. Though I felt the sting of my own sin, I remember that His grace swallows my sin. (Romans 5:20)

When you wonder what to do in a situation, reflect on what you have done and ask these questions. Is there something I said or did wrong? Did I disobey God's word? Is there someone I need to apologize to? Did I please God in this situation? If I didn't, what do I need to turn from? In what ways should I ask God for wisdom? (James 1:5) As we ask these and other reflective questions, let's watch God show us the right path, so He can turn our reflection into transformation to be more like Jesus. (Romans 8:28-30)
Pause and Reflect
- When have you been in a situation you regret? How might reflection help you grow better for the future?
- Where in your life do you need to ask for reflection so God can give you His direction and wisdom right now? What is one way you will begin to reflect more in your life this week?
