Church kids who grew up in the late ’80s and early ’90s know every word to Rich Mullins’ “Awesome God.” Now, Phil Wickham is introducing the song to an entirely new generation and giving the global hit a modern glow up on “What An Awesome God.”
The beloved worship leader remembers hearing “Awesome God” for the first time as a preschooler during a childcare session at church. Later, it became one of the first songs he ever learned to play on guitar.
Together with longtime collaborator Jonathan Smith, Wickham adds new verses around Mullins’ central chorus and a steady beat that drives the classic worship anthem into the current decade. A choir further elevates the timeless standard.
“I can’t believe I get to be a small part of this song’s story,” Wickham reflects. “I feel like every generation carries this song in a new way, and I’m honored to bring it to this one. So pumped to give it some new life and continue sharing it with the world.”
Prior to Wickham’s recording, Christian music legend Michael W. Smith put his stamp on the revered refrain for his double-Platinum project, “Worship.” This month, the two artists teamed up to perform a special multigenerational version of the track.
