We’re holding this demonstration again this Thursday.
For the last 22 summers I’ve locked myself in a closed animal shelter vehicle on a hot day to demonstrate the dangers of leaving pets and people in cars….even for just a few minutes.
Our two main points are how fast the temperatures rises and how high it can go. It can literally turn deadly in less than two minutes.
Here’s a video compilation from last year. It talks about heat on the pavement. Danger to people and pets. And it demonstrates how hot it gets in a closed vehicle and how fast it happens.
You’ll notice that last year we left the windows open a few inches. It made little to no difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siJNxmddE84

Here’s another video that we shot last September on a hot day. It’s real time and shows the temperature in our station wagon going from 78 degrees to 111 degrees in less than two minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M70X9iGM3aQ
There are also still photos showing rising temperatures in our shelter vehicles. And 133 degrees on our parking lot.
After 22 years, it’s time to “pass the thermometer” to RCHS Animal Care Lead Keegan Bosch. I’ll still be here for the news conference and demonstration. But when it’s time to grab the thermometer and get in the car, Keegan will be there representing pets and people. THANK YOU Keegan! - John D.
