Sarah Shaver spoke with Brittany Tomilla, Shelter Manager of Almost Home Humane Society, receiving stray and animal control in Lafayette and West Lafayette, Indiana and providing pet adoption and food assistance in all of Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Tomilla said their mission also includes a pet food and litter pantry for pet owners to keep them from having to surrender their pet, information and help with "trap, neuter, return" for cat colonies, education, and working with pet fosters to get animals ready for adoption. Tomilla said the old idea of "dog pounds" is no longer relevant and that Almost Home works with many pet rescue groups throughout the county. She said it's important to know you're not adopting a certain breed of cat or dog - or the occasional bearded dragon or guinea pig - but you are adopting a personality and a family member for a lifetime commitment.
