Sarah Shaver talked with Debi Schuster, Director of Connections and Small Groups at Stafford Crossing Community Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia about their Celebrate Recovery Program (CR). Stafford Crossing’s CR, a Christ-centered 12-step recovery group, helps bring healing to anyone burdened with life’s hurts, habits, and hangups. Shuster described CR’s history, that It’s for more than substance addiction, and the hurts from our past cause problems in our lives that only Jesus Christ can heal. Schuster described the 12 Steps, 8 Principles, Biblical comparisons, the importance of safety and trust, what a CR meeting is like, accountability partners and sponsors, and also the Step Study. Schuster said she’s seen lives healed and changed through CR including her own and that’s it’s a great discipleship program as well. Schuster said an important part of the small groups and Step Study is you are there to focus on your own issues and not to give anyone advice or counseling and that is freeing because we all struggle with something. We may believe our lives are “normal,” but are secretly struggling with issues we don’t know we have and CR helps uncover those issues.
