Sarah Shaver spoke with Shannon Cunningham-Sneed, Executive Director of Central West Virginia Community Action, Incorporated (CWVCA), an agency dating from President Lyndon Johnson’s “War On Poverty” in the 1960’s. The CWVCA mission is to provide pathways to economic independence for families by leading initiatives that address the root causes of poverty and show a pathway to greater success primarily in Harrison and Lewis counties, with some programming in Gilmer, Ritchie, and Marion counties. Cunningham-Sneed noted that Central WV Community Action doesn’t work for people - they work with people, hand in hand, and they listen to the voices of low-income people. CWVCA’s services include Head Start, senior transportation, case management, mental and behavioral health, The New Life Food project, and housing assistance, with case management.
