Sarah Shaver interviewed Candy Phillips, Executive Director of First Step, A Response to Domestic Violence, in Harrisonburg. Ms. Phillips outlined their mission and how they seek to bring their vision of a world free from domestic violence to reality. They utilize safe shelter services, advocacy and case management services, counseling, assistance for children, and more to help survivors become empowered and move past the violence they’ve experienced. This also addresses generational domestic violence, whether as a victim or an abuser. Ms. Phillips recounted First Step’s origins, the nature of domestic violence, and critical information about the situations of domestic violence victims. She also talked about their teen dating violence education, how to help a friend who is a victim, and how First Step helps victims make plans to leave an abusive situation.
