As millions of Americans remain in their homes or work from home, so do members of the Colorado Symphony. But 49 musicians from the Symphony took part in an incredible performance. None were actually together. Social distancing very much maintained.
Each member used their individual talent from their home and the 49 videos, recorded separately, were combined in post-production to create the full spectrum sound of a live concert. WATCH the video below.
The Colorado Symphony tells us Beethoven’s Ninth, known as “Ode to Joy,” was chosen because it “is a true hymn to humanity, expressing universal ideals of brotherhood, peace, and freedom for all. This crisis has made it all the more important to hold dear to these values…”
The original poem, written in 1785 by Friedrich Schiller, made clear references to God and eternity, with some of the lyrics pointing to Christianity. That poem influenced Beethoven to craft the symphony. Then in 1907, lyrics for the Christian hymn “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” were written - to be sung to the music created by Beethoven. That hymn was incredibly popular.
Looking ahead, the Colorado Symphony is planning a major event, hopefully occurring well after the current COVID-19 crisis is past. That will be the complete performance of Beethoven’s masterpiece at Red Rocks Amphitheater on July 26.
