David Molina walks the campus of Cedarville University with gratitude and awe — a far cry from his childhood in Communist Cuba, where religious freedom was just a dream.
Now a rising sophomore nursing major, Molina is one of the first Cuban-born students to attend the Christian university in southwest Ohio, along with his brother, Pablo. Their journey, marked by faith and perseverance, is a testament to what Molina calls “God’s providence.”
“It’s amazing to be in a place where professors talk openly about Jesus,” Molina said. “I never imagined I’d have this freedom.”
Molina’s story began in Cuba, where his parents encountered the Gospel through a missionary who visited the island unexpectedly. Their newfound faith led to years of government scrutiny but also to bold church planting and missionary work across Cuba and Ecuador.
After years of challenges, a surprising visa opportunity allowed the family to move to the United States, sponsored by the same missionary who first shared the Gospel with them. Now based in Columbus, Ohio, the family continues to serve the Hispanic community through church ministry.
At Cedarville, Molina says he is thriving in an environment that encourages both academic and spiritual growth. “I treasure the freedom to speak about my faith and worship without fear,” he said. “I know what it costs to have that freedom.”
Molina’s passion for service extends beyond campus. He is active in outreach to the local Hispanic community and hopes to pursue a career in medical missions, possibly returning to Cuba one day to serve both the physical and spiritual needs of his people.
“My journey isn’t just about leaving Cuba,” Molina said. “It’s about following God’s calling — wherever it leads.”
