16-year-old Bella Gueck wrote on Instagram, “I’ve been struggling to find my words about everything going on. With more research and thought, I found the words to write this song.”
The original song is simply titled, “They Can’t Breathe.” Part of the lyrics say, “God gave me a voice so I’m gonna use it.”
Tammy, the very proud mother of the Dallas-area teen, tells us, “my 16 year old daughter Isabella wrote this song yesterday during Black Out Tuesday. She has a huge heart and a passion for helping people. She wants this song shared, not for the “likes” or accolades, but to help make a change and to use her voice to speak truth.”
You’ll find the full lyrics to Bella’s original song below the video.
THEY CAN’T BREATHE — an original song by Isabella Gueck
@bella.gueck #blackouttuesday
I woke up this morning and took a breath
It’s crazy how much I take for granted
Cuz I don’t know what it’s like to be scared
So I smile blind, believing life is fair
Pretending, people around me aren’t
scared to death,
Scared of death
“I don’t wanna post
But I’m not part of the problem”
“These issues don’t hurt me
So why should I help solve them?”
But I can’t scroll through my feed today
No, the screen went black
cuz they’re tired of being afraid
Tired of waiting for change
So use your voice
Join the crowd
We’re getting louder and louder
And won’t back down
You have a choice
Make it now
We’ve been singing “the land of the free”
But they can’t breathe
He was helpless alone
But there’s power in numbers
So when I scream
I’m screaming for my brother
If we all make a ripple right now
It will grow to a flood
Until darkness drowns
My daughter won’t know hate
Your son won’t know fear
We’re writing history
They have to start listening if you
Use your voice
Join the crowd
We’re getting louder and louder
And won’t back down
You have a choice
Make it now
We’ve been singing “the land of the free”
But they can’t breathe
God gave me a voice
so I’m gonna use it
I can make the right choice
So I’m gonna choose it
Jesus said to the least of these
“Love your neighbor as yourself
You’re the same to Me”
In the land of the free
I may not know your story
But I’m gonna learn it
And fight til you can breathe
I won’t hold my breath
I won’t bite my tongue
Until you can breathe
